Honda Insight vs Accord hybrid 2022 Reddit

Looking to buy a new (2022) high efficiency vehicle around $30k. Initially wanted an EV/PIH, but there are few options to be found in the Midwest right now and the current market obviously does not favor buyers on a budget.

My local Honda dealership can get both a new Accord Hybrid (EX-L trim) and an Insight (Touring trim) within my purchasing timeframe, but I probably won’t be able to see/test drive the Insight before needing to decide on the Accord.

Can anyone offer - ahem - insight into the feel/experience of these two vehicles? They seem to have basically the same fuel efficiency and comparable features (with the aforementioned packages), so I’m looking for advice about performance, driving feel, visibility/cabin room, etc. What would you want to know about one or both of these models if you were buying sight-unseen?

My all around work commute is roughly 60 minutes, 5 days per week. While I know the insight goes for 47hwy/55 city, the accord hybrid goes for 48hwy/48 city. I’m wondering if the extra horsepower for the accord hybrid along with extra features is worth the extra cost for accord. Anyone have any input or experience with the reliability of both cars? I’m anticipating having either car for at least 6-8 years all told so reliability is a major factor as well.

iMA = Bad. That was their system in the late 2000s to early 2010s. A shite mild hybrid system with even worse batteries.

Their current stuff (iMMD) is pretty fantastic. Decently quick for a hybrid, quiet and refined, and much more reliable than their old system.

Honda uses a serial hybrid system, which is quite different than Toyota's parallel system. As weird as it sounds, it's like a gas powered EV. The electric motor drives the front wheels in most driving scenarios. It's powered either by the battery, gas generator, or a combo of both. Only in higher speed cruising situations is the gas engine connected directly to the front wheels through a clutch pack. There's no transmission in a traditional sense. It's a super smooth unit that doesn't have any of the rubber banding effect of a traditional CVT.

My lovely 2016 Honda Civic was recently totaled, so I'm now in the market for a replacement. I don't like the design of the 11th generation Honda Civic, and I can't seem to find a regular ICE Honda Accord in a color I like on the lot at any of my local Honda dealerships -- but, they do have some Honda Insights and Honda Accord Hybrids. I will likely only need this car for a year at most (I'll be moving abroad after that), so I'd like to know which one holds its value better.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to drive it for a year, put a few thousand miles on it, and sell it back for not much less than MSRP. Assuming the used car market doesn't miraculously right itself over the next few months, I don't think that's an unreasonable assumption.

So, if you were choosing between the two, which would you choose, in terms of resale value?

I'm in the market for a new Honda and I'm torn between buying a hybrid (probably an Insight, but maybe an Accord hybrid), or sticking with a traditional ICE (probably a Civic, but maybe an Accord). My most recent car was a 2016 Honda Civic (160,000 miles), which was reliable and stupid cheap to maintain. Never had to do any expensive repairs and I'm sure it would've easily lasted another 100,000 miles or more if it hadn't been totalled.

I'm leaning toward buying a hybrid because of the fuel economy. 55 mpg with the Honda Insight is hard to pass up! However, I'm concerned that I will inevitably have to cough up several thousand dollars to replace the battery pack. My goal is to replicate my experience with my last Civic -- years of cheap and reliable use with no expensive repairs. So, should I assume I will eventually need to replace the battery pack if I buy a hybrid and keep it long-term? If this is the case, I will probably compromise on the fuel economy and stick with a traditional ICE Civic or Accord.

I'm looking at purchasing either a new Insight or Accord Hybrid in the next few months and was wondering if anyone has opinions on either or both. Obviously the Insight is a little smaller, and I am 6'4" so that is a consideration. Back seat space isn't a concern as it will mostly be for commuting. I would probably be looking at either the Accord EX or the Insight Touring, which are fairly close in price.

Is the Insight or accord better?
