Early life

The speaker was born on July 21, 1986, in Dalton, Georgia, United States. He is the son of Joseph Edgar Jones and Joyce Marie Jones. His father was a brick mason, while his mom was a stay-at-home wife. He had a sister, Marsha Jones Dalton, who was adopted when she was seven but to whom he is nonetheless very close.

Jones grew up in the town of Dalton, where he was active from a young age. He was interested in sports and loved playing baseball and football. During his free time, he often helped his father in his business. Despite only having one sibling, he enjoyed a large extended family and spent a lot of time with his grandfather and uncles.

Jones attended Southeast Whitfield High school in Dalton, where he played football and ran track and field. He did well in school and was the first in his family to graduate high school. He attended college in 2004.

Jones attended Dalton State College, where he took classes on and off for a few semesters. Afterwards, he got a job as a forklift driver. However, after being disillusioned by the life that awaits him, he decides to enrol in the marines.

Military career

After enlisting, Jones travelled to Parris Island in South Carolina, where he underwent basic training. After basic training, he went to serve for eight years in the United States Marine Corps. He worked as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (bomb technician), where he was tasked with helping to disarm and destroy IEDs (improvised explosive devices).

Jones was deployed on two combat tours – to Iraq and Afghanistan. During his second tour – to Afghanistan – he helped the military disarm over 80 IEDs. Unfortunately, during one of the disarming operations, he stepped on an IED, which exploded, resulting in serious injuries.

He lost both of his legs and suffered severe damage to his hands. Luckily, he was evacuated and transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, where he recovered.

Motivational speaker and non-profit work

While the injuries that Jones had suffered in Afghanistan were severe and life-changing, he used the opportunity to make lives better for other veterans. While recovering at Walter Reed, he started a peer visitation program, where recovering wounded veterans would come to visit and encourage newly wounded soldiers.

His work at the hospital led him to collaborate with leaders (military and politicians), which helped improve conditions for wounded soldiers. After recovering from his injuries, he joined Georgetown University, where he pursued a bachelor's degree in Arts. While at the university, he co-founded the first student organization for veterans and was instrumental in helping improve the lives of veteran students.

Jones started sharing his story with the media, politicians, military leaders, soldiers, and other people. His effort saw him appear on several TV stations, such as CNN, Fox & Friends, Hallmark Channels, CBS, ABC, and others, where he shared his story.
