Greg Jenner is joined in 17th-century West Africa by Dr Daniel F. Silva and Athena Kugblenu to meet the warrior queen, Njinga of Ndongo and Matamba. One of the most formidable queens in history, Njinga lived a tumultuous life and was able to defy Portuguese colonial rule for decades. For such a successful ruler, not much is known about her. Much of what is said about her in European and Western stories paints a picture of a cold-hearted, bloodthirsty warlord. But how much of that is true?

Inspiring, enriching

Engaging, well researched, reliable and hilarious...and posing more intriguing puzzles than it solves... like all Greg Jenner's work!! This series has also inspired me to order book after book and open up whole areas of history I've never investigated. I've moved from Catalhoyuk to Near and Middle Eastern history, the Terracotta Warriors to Chinese history in general and many investigations into the whole extent of Egyptian history, as well as investigating Mediaeval Europe. I'm much better informed about history than I ever was, I'm enjoying going down wormholes in my own reading (that inevitablt lead to other wormholes), and Greg Jenner's whole opus is enriching my life...and giving me funny stories to bore my friends with! Thank you!!

Easy listening!

Funny, informative and inclusive. Easy to stick on when doing other tasks ‘cause you can zone out and come back to it. Mostly clean so okay for young ears. I liked the Captain Cook episode with the Pacific Islander perspective and, contrary to other reviewers, Kemah Bob’s deadpan wit on the Hatshepsut episode is right up my alley.

If only

If only we could just have the podcast without the low quality comedy. If only we could hear history as we understand it without imposing current day norms (just like future generations will laugh at us).
