History[]Early life[]Details on her past are unknown, other than that she was hired as Helena's servant and that, according to her, she had been a participant in the fifth Dead or Alive tournament. Arrival at New Zack Island[]Marie Rose was told by Helena to go on a vacation out of the blue. Although Marie Rose was hesitant to abandon her duties to Helena, she ultimately decided to make the best of the situation and have a vacation. The Sixth Tournament[]While making preparations for the Sixth Dead or Alive tournament, Helena met with her and requested she undergo a task of vital importance, although she made clear that she needed to spar with Marie to see if she was capable of doing this task. After Marie Rose beat her mistress and thus proved herself, she then explained that she needed to look after a participant in the previous Dead or Alive tournament, Honoka, due to suspecting that MIST was planning to use her for vile purposes. Sometime later, Hayate arrived on the Freedom Survivor, with Marie Rose barring him entry and refusing to budge until Helena explicitly told her that Hayate was invited by her. She then witnessed Helena's meeting with Hayate, including his recognition of someone among DIG. After Hayate left, Marie informed Helena that she has arranged a suite room through the port of New York, and also let slip that Zack's abrupt departure involved a new girlfriend. She later staked out for Honoka's arrival, intending to "befriend" her as part of the mission she was given, although she had some hesitance due to not being comfortable pretending to be someone's friend. She then in a panic accidentally, and literally, bumped into Honoka, and after bluntly stating Honoka should be more careful, she introduced herself, and claimed she had participated in the previous tournament as Honoka had. After successfully befriending her, she took her to Lost Paradise, although the arrival of a pterosaur forced Marie Rose to shove Honoka out of the way and use her Systema ability to dodge the pterosaur. Because of Honoka's knack for learning anything she sees, she demanded that Marie Rose show her. Marie obliged, although under the condition that Honoka keep it a secret. Afterwards, Honoka returned the favor when another pterodactyl flew by, leaving Marie Rose stunned. Marie then constantly accompanied Honoka, even tutoring her for classes. However, Honoka also proved to be a hassle at times largely due to her obsessive attempts at learning fighting styles from various fighters directly, and once even managed to interrupt Marie's reporting to Helena. Marie and Honoka later had a run-in with Brad Wong, who turned Marie's drink into a Bloody Mary, much to Marie's chagrin and Honoka's amazement, although they pointed out they were underage for drinking when he tried to make them an alcoholic beverage on the house. Some time later, Marie Rose and Honoka encountered Ayane, who fought and defeated Honoka in order to test her suspicions on the latter. Marie Rose then drove her off. Afterwards, the pair travel to Honoka's favorite shop, where Honoka claims a ninja also often comes to for food. Marie then wonders if the ninja was the same one they encountered earlier, though Honoka admitted she was joking. Unbeknownst to them, Kasumi, the one Honoka was referencing, was hiding nearby and overheard this. Marie Rose then encountered Ayane again when she ambushed them, and fought the ninja in an attempt to protect Honoka. She lost to Ayane, although MIST capitalized on the distraction to make off with Honoka. She then tried to send several text messages to Honoka despite Ayane's insistence that they were probably not going to let Honoka near her phone. Nevertheless, she got a reply indicating where Honoka was being held. She and Ayane then worked together to infiltrate MIST's lab, with Ayane also jamming a shutter long enough to allow Marie Rose through while holding off NiCO. However, Marie later discovered that Ayane, too, was captured. To make matters worse, she also ended up caught by Christie and was nearly shot by her before Bayman, who had been sent by Helena to retrieve Marie Rose, interfered and drove Christie off. Marie attempted to protest against Bayman evacuating her since she wished to rescue Honoka, even fighting him, although he ultimately bested her, and told her there's nothing she can do at this point. She is ultimately reunited with Honoka by Hayate and Kasumi, although Honoka is left unconscious by the ordeal. She then left the lab with Bayman, Honoka, Ryu (who had taken out a MIST chopper) and Helena (who had just arrived at the location to find Miyako). Despite the situation, Helena while passing by assured Marie that she did well in her mission. Arrival at the Venus Islands[]Similar to on New Zack Island, Marie Rose accompanied Helena to the Venus Islands. Unlike before, however, she had her own personal motives for partaking in the vacation and ultimately, in participating in the Venus Festival. After Helena told Marie Rose to go out and play for most of the vacation, Marie Rose wanted to prove to Helena that she was not to be treated like a child. She initially planned on having the vacation by herself due to it being what most adults do, but she quickly got bored when she met the Owner. After learning of the Venus Festival, she then got the idea of participating in it and winning top prize as her way of proving to Helena of her true status as an adult, and eagerly requested that the Owner help her in that goal under the condition that he not treat her like a child. Character[]Appearance[]See also: Marie Rose's costumesMarie Rose is the shortest female fighter in the Dead or Alive series, standing at only 147 cm (4' 10"), with a small frame. She has fair skin, light blonde, bottom-length hair that's held up in twin-pigtails (Her hair is possibly much longer due to the fact that she seems to wrap up the base of her twin-tails) with black ribbons and dark blue eyes. She is able to wear her hair down in Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 and a few outfits in Last Round, but like Kasumi her hair is drastically shorter; it comes down to about mid back level and is somewhat thin. Aside from this, she also has a variant of her trademark twin-tails where they are depicted as high twin ponytails, as well as having a singular ponytail from the back and having her hair stylized in twin buns. She appears very childlike, and looks younger than her actual age. Her initial design is inspired by Gothic Lolita Fashion, displayed by her default costume which is a modified strapless maid dress, with arm sleeves. Her other alternate outfits are quite modest, with a lot of Gothic Lolita implements; platform heeled shoes, black nail polish, Gothic arm accessories, and frequent use of the colors black and white are recurring elements in her additional outfits. Her ribbons are also always black, with the choice of pointed or tied ribbons, or a black and white bonnet. While her revealing outfits are sexualized significantly (like the other female fighters' costumes), her outfits are mostly skirts, and aside from her bloomers in her signature Gothic Lolita dress, her underwear are basically the same as the other girls. With the exception of her Hot Summer swimwear, the swimsuits she gains in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round are generally one-piece suits, including a sukumizu. Marie Rose possesses the smallest bust out of all the female characters in the series, a direct contrast to her friend and rival Honoka who possesses the largest bust, which was even the subject of a pun in their Japanese tag team intro. In Dead or Alive 6, while she keeps a majority of her signature outfits including new recolors, she also has new ones that include a cute sweater dress in pink, white, and black, and she also has a lolita style outfit that has a frilled shirt and shorts with heeled lolita shoes and a matching miniature Lolita hat with a small ascot tie. She also receives more hairstyles such as her ponytail from the Venus Vacation game, and even double buns from the Fan Design costume contest with red pointed hair ties similar to her normal ones. Personality[]Through Dead or Alive 6's story, Marie Rose is shown to be both devoted and loyal, seen in how she behaves towards Helena who she is a servant to, and Honoka who she befriends during the course of their time together. She is also caring and protective as she tried to prevent Hayate from seeing Helena despite him being requested by Helena himself, and she was also quick to try to fight Bayman when she was separated from Honoka in the M.I.S.T. Labs, proving that she isn't afraid to take on danger of any size if it means protecting those she's attached or loyal to. On the other hand, Marie Rose can act very childish and doesn't seem to take losing lightly; she appears to be crying on the ground like a little girl when she loses a match, but if watched long enough, she lifts her face out of her hands before resuming her apparent fake crying. Ironically, despite her often acting childish, Xtreme Venus Vacation reveals that she hates being compared to a child or treated like one. She also has little problem with wearing some revealing outfits, although she does have her limits, as during a Cover Girl photo op, even she was ashamed at having to show a significant amount of herself to Helena when she alongside Kasumi had to do a very suggestive "prayer pose" near the god statue, and she also objected to her Davi outfit's more revealing alternate form. She also at times tends to get distracted by other activities over obligations, as evidenced by how she got herself and Kasumi late for a meeting with the Owner by choosing to get a tan. Aside from this, Marie Rose also tends to speak in a very formal manner, owing to her background as one of Helena's servants, although it's implied she has trouble avoiding acting formally to others in situations not requiring it, such as when on vacation. Marie Rose purports to not care too much about her lack of physical development in comparison to the other females in the series. Despite this, however, she is implied to be jealous of Honoka for her large assets. She also admits that she at times wishes she had a more mature body, although only in the sense that she not be mistaken for a child by people. In addition, in the Japanese versions of Xtreme 3, Xtreme Venus Vacation and Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, she has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person, which is significantly downplayed in the English versions. Etymology and Concept[]Marie is French in origin, and is the french version of "Mary", whose meaning and origin are unclear. Rose is the name of a flower which comes in a variety of colors, each color having a different meaning. Dead or Alive 6 producer and director Yohei Shimbori stated that Marie Rose was largely derived from anime tropes, specifically being small and cute.[3] Relationship[]Helena Douglas[]Marie Rose seems to be respectful to Helena, referring to her as "my lady" in their tag team alliance when Marie Rose calls her. In Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, their friendly relationship is made quite clear, as they are both seen giving a curtsy to their opponents in their tag introduction, and upon winning, proceeds to beam up at Helena where Helena will mention that it's almost time for coffee. It is hinted in her character title that she is one of Helena's servants. She also has a massive amount of respect for Helena, which she makes clear to Misaki. In Warriors All Stars, she shows that she loves Helena and she already misses her and shows some concern that Helena might get so worried due to her being gone for too long. In addition, she was dutiful enough to Helena that when meeting Hayate, she initially attempted to bar entry until Helena explicitly told her that she invited him in. She also sometimes mentions her when she is seen interacting with someone in the spring like Ayane, Kasumi, and Hayabusa or something in the spring like the massage chair, foods, and other items. Although very loyal to Helena, she does nonetheless get annoyed about how she treats her as if she were a child due to her physique, which can be inferred from her bio and first episode in Xtreme Venus Vacation. Honoka[]The two are friends and share a full Tag Battle partnership. During the Sixth Tournament, Marie Rose was tasked by Helena to watch over Honoka, mostly due to the latter's powers making her a target by MIST to revive Raidou. During her travels with Honoka, Marie Rose has not left her side and both have made a strong bond. Marie Rose cares very deeply for Honoka, as she does everything in her power to rescue her when Honoka was captured by MIST, and worries deeply for Honoka's safety. Her loyalty to Honoka was such that she refused to leave without rescuing Honoka first, with not even Bayman knocking her out and carrying her over his shoulder dissuading her until he bested her in combat. Interestingly, in the Japanese versions, Honoka is the only character whom Marie Rose does not attempt to talk back to when referred to as a child. Nyotengu[]It's not clear what her and Nyotengu's views are on each other, but they do share a tag throw. Perhaps due to her experience on watching horror movies, real life and movie does not matters to her anyway, implied that she did believes super natural does exist in real life as well. In Xtreme Venus Vacation, Marie Rose and Nyotengu had some degree of acquaintance, as the two alongside Honoka attempted to plan out how to celebrate the then-upcoming first anniversary of their arrival at the Venus Islands. However, similar to most of the other girls, she does get cross when Nyotengu makes remarks that implied that she viewed Marie Rose as being a child. Misaki[]She largely got along well with Misaki, even referring to her formally as "Lady Misaki" during their first on-screen meeting. However, she was made to quit calling Misaki that by Helena due to their being on vacation and it disturbing Misaki. While largely getting along well with Misaki, she also tended to get annoyed by her speaking to her in a manner that indicated she viewed Marie Rose as a child, repeatedly telling Misaki not to treat her as such, and eventually requesting the Owner to spend the food via Misaki's paycheck during the Venus Festival in what is heavily implied to be revenge. She also frequently hung out with Misaki and Honoka via swimming and shopping, mostly because Helena forbade her from doing any servant duties whilst on vacation. During this time, the two often called her a "Tsukkomi" (a Japanese trope roughly equivalent to the straight man in comedy duos), much to her confusion. Kokoro[]In Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, Kokoro and Marie Rose apparently don't like each other, as they had a single musical note regarding their relationship level. Despite this, however, Xtreme Venus Vacation indicated that they at least had some respect for each other, as Marie Rose was among those Kokoro had a heart-to-heart talk with regarding a questionnaire. Marie Rose also wondered, based on Honoka and Misaki's description of themselves as "Boke" (referring to a Japanese trope for the funny man or comic in comedy duos), whether Kokoro was also a "Boke", with Kokoro being slightly hurt by this comparison. Momiji[]She has once interacted with Momiji during a New Year's festival, where she acted as a model for New Year's Cards. Other than one brief time during a photography session (which is implied to be due to heightened irritation at the heaviness of her kimono), she didn't mind too much Momiji referring to her in a manner befitting a child. She even once asked for advice regarding how to undergo the New Year's festivities at a Shinto shrine. Kasumi[]In Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation, Kasumi and Marie Rose seemed to get along fairly well (it's implied that the reason they knew each other was through Helena), and worked with Marie Rose for a photoshoot relating to New Years cards. During another photoshoot, this time to act as Cover Girls, Kasumi also admitted that it was "reassuring" that Marie Rose was present when the Owner called them to act as Cover Girls. The shinobi also largely agreed to a commemorative photo in front of the god statue despite her personal misgivings to the Cover Girl photoshoot (especially her having to wear a particularly skimpy outfit for it) because Marie Rose thought it was okay to do so. Ayane[]During the Sixth Tournament, Marie Rose initially considered Ayane an enemy after the latter attacked Honoka to test her abilities, with further tension occurring when she ambushed them again with the intent of taking Honoka into protection. Ultimately Marie Rose was defeated by Ayane. However, after MIST exploited their fighting to make off with Honoka, the two ended up working together to orchestrate a rescue, with Ayane even using one of her Kunais to jam the door long enough for Marie Rose to get through so she could find Honoka while Ayane fought NiCO. However, shortly afterward, Ayane was captured and used to revive Raidou, with Marie Rose learning this from a monitor display much to her horror. Tamaki[]Marie Rose was familiar with Tamaki through her association with Helena, and was largely was distrusting of Tamaki, which is heavily implied to be due to Tamaki's more lewd reputation. She once warned her friend Honoka about Tamaki being "aggressive" (implied to be related to Tamaki's obsession with fondling breasts), and Helena apparently was aware of Marie Rose's distrust of Tamaki, as she warned her that Marie Rose probably would scold Tamaki again if she came close. Once, she also ended up telling Tamaki off after an incident at her welcoming party where Tamaki in an implied groping attempt inadvertently humiliated Momiji by ripping her dress, and eventually threatened to report Tamaki to Helena for both this as well as a similar situation with her friend Honoka. Helena later commented on complaints made by Misaki and Marie Rose relating to Tamaki, implying that Marie Rose made good on her threat to Tamaki. As such, she also was reluctant to wear anything Tamaki supplied to her unless it was mandated by the Owner. She also admitted that she found Tamaki suspicious whenever she laughs. She also got irritated when she learned that Tamaki was responsible for the newly arrived female Oni guest Kanna's revealing lingerie. Nanami[]Nanami got acquainted with Marie Rose alongside Honoka, with them briefly teaching her about Beach Volleyball. They also had an icebreaker chat regarding preferred movie genres, though Nanami was slightly disturbed to learn that Marie Rose loved horror movies. They then agreed to a compromise of watching each of their respective genres. Owner[]Marie Rose is shown to be very respectful to the Owner in a manner comparable to or possibly even higher than her respect for Helena. It is heavily implied in her dialogue that she has a bit of a crush on the owner. On a similar note, it was also heavily implied that the Owner was familiar enough with Marie Rose's child-like demeanor that he deliberately paired Kasumi up with Marie Rose for a tan-removal related beauty salon specifically to ensure the two got enough of a tan to start up the event, with Marie Rose largely being impressed by his foresight. Once, the Owner's inattention resulted in a humiliating accident on Marie Rose's part, where she was implicitly stripped of her swimwear while in the water. This eventually resulted in Marie Rose deciding to return the favor by making sure to watch the Owner whenever he was near the pool to teach him a lesson. Bayman[]Bayman was implied to be familiar with Marie Rose via Helena before meeting her face to face, although this was largely one-sided. He rescued her from Christie, although he then carried her away to get her to safety (even punching her in the gut in order to subdue her), much to Marie Rose's irritation, as she didn't want to leave without Honoka (who at the time had been captured), forcing him to fight her when she refused to leave. Gameplay[]See also: Marie Rose's command listsMarie Rose is a relatively easy character to use, and has a defensive and technical fighting style. She is a hold specialist on par with Leifang, with expert holds and several special moves to go along with her regular holds that enable her to counter any type of strike. Her "Rondo" special move parries high and mid-punches, similar to Leifang's Unshu and can be entered from various combos. Likewise, her "Minuet" special move evades low strikes. She can also do a forward roll ("Flower Wheel") from which she can deliver strikes or offensive holds, or evade high attacks. She has very good combo potential, juggling the opponent with relative ease, even heavier set characters like Bass. Unfortunately, she does little damage, and as such she relies on combos and good reads to get damage via critical stuns or well timed expert holds. Her expert holds however are more advantageous ones, which means unlike characters like Bayman who have expert holds that'll deal high damage, Marie Rose will have to work for damage by performing a combo while her opponent is stunned. She also has an offensive hold that she can use while backturned that'll leave her opponent backturned to her, allowing the chance for a strong guaranteed combo. Besides her lower damage however, Marie rose lacks swift mix ups, as her low attacks tend to be predictable and slow, and even her more straightforward follow ups are fairly reactable as well. As such Marie must play carefully to avoid getting countered although she's fairly safe in terms of attacks on block. She also is easy to sidestep due to lacking tracking moves, and the ones she does have tend to be slow. Overall despite her minor weaknesses, she's a defensive catalytic powerhouse when mastered and can hold her own. In Dead or Alive 6, she has received a couple of improvements, such as her flower wheel forward roll's cartwheel now causing a fatal stun, now having a tracking spinning mid kick which while slow, it knocks down and also grants her another attack to go into Rondo from. She also has a new air kicking attack that acts as a launcher and she has a few new string options to make her more versatile. Non-Dead or Alive appearances[]Warriors All-Stars[]Marie in Warriors All-Stars. Marie Rose is a playable character in Koei's hack-and-slash title, Warriors All-Stars, representing the Dead or Alive series alongside Ayane, Honoka, and Kasumi. In an alternate world that relies on a miraculous spring to sustain itself, the King who could control the spring's powers suddenly perished, leaving the world in turmoil. The Queen told her daughter, Tamaki, to summon otherworldly heroes to save their land, but the attempted summoning malfunctioned and left them scattered in different areas. Eventually, other members of this royal family are deemed eligible for the throne, dividing all the heroes into three warring factions. In the game, Marie Rose, along with Kasumi and Honoka, is a member of Setsuna's force. Senran Kagura series[]Marie Rose, together with Honoka and Ayane, serve as recurring Dead or Alive guest characters in most of the Senran Kagura games. Peach Beach Splash[]Marie Rose appeared in Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash as one of three paid DLC characters released on March 30th, 2017 for the game and will be one of the the representing Dead or Alive along with Honoka and Ayane (the latter formerly appeared in Senran Kagura: Estival Versus). New Link[]Alongside Ayane, Honoka, Kasumi, Marie Rose also made an appearance in the game Shinobi Masters Senran Kagura: New Link as part of a collaboration between that game and Dead or Alive. Whereas Ayane has appeared in every Dead or Alive event, Marie Rose and Honoka are solely representing the Xtreme Venus Vacation event, while Kasumi is solely representing the Dead or Alive 6 event. In Xtreme Venus Vacation, as part of the collaboration, Marie Rose alongside Hitomi and Fiona will also wear an outfit derived from the Homura's Crimson Squad uniforms from New Link, with the other girls wearing differing outfits based on the other factions. Aside from this, her Senran Kagura swimwear from Xtreme 3 also returned. If the player links accounts between Xtreme Venus Vacation and New Link, they will get 12 bonus episodes involving Marie Rose and Honoka in the latter game.
