I think is incorrect to say " America" means "United States", because America it's the whole continent which it means, South America, Central America and North America. And USA it's only North America. So, it's only correct to use US or USA if you want to talk about North America or EEUU.

@HiroTraveler In the US, I often hear people say “American” to refer to people who’s born in the US. But I usually hear people refer to the country as “the States”. Only when taking to foreigner in a foreign country will people say the “United States” or USA. For example, if I am traveling in Japan, I would say “ I am not an American but I live in the United States.” But if I am talking to someone while I am in the US, “Can we order something from Amazon Japan and have it shipped to the States?”
