Super Smash was giving me trouble to play 2 players. Then I discovered you have to go to the Switch home screen, enter in the controller settings and then press L+R on each joycons. When you come back to the game, it will be possible to assign two players. I don't know if it will work for you, worth a try. You're browsing the GameFAQs Message Boards as a guest. However, using only a single Joycon definitely hinders your ability to do well. I would recommend either using both Joycons or a Pro controller for a better experience.
