How much have you overfilled and have you drained it off?

DON'T DRIVE ANYMORE

The loud noise is damage occurring to the engine internals.

agreed. drain the oil and fill to the correct level before you use the car again, too much oil can be as bad as too little

Overfilling causes the crank to dip into the oil, this churns it (it mixes with air creating foam) - in turn too much oil pressure which can cause damage to the bearings, rods, crank etc as the pump won't function properly and there's too much aeration in the oil.

Drop the oil, fill the correct amount and hope for the best

help meh!

so i did the same thing by overfilling my oil. I had it drained and filled to the correct level, but the knocking hasn't stopped. The garage told me it would go away shortly, but on my drive home my car started playin up and seems like the noise has gotten louder? What should I do?

Uhhhh, 2 or 3 quarts? :disappoin Yea, something is going to happen, if not just a mess.

No, 3 quarts will not cause the engine to knock. Depending on the engine and oil pan size most engines will run with that much over. Some if over filled simply will not start. Having that much over in oil will only cause the oil pressure to build so high that you will start to blow seal through out your engine, thus needing the engine to be pulled out and torn down. Might as well rebuild it since you are doing that.

Too much oil will make the engine sounds like knock, the Rod Journals hit the oil and making knocking sound, not to mention the fact that it will making air pockets (bubbles) in your bushings and cause the engine to Overheat.
