Will there be a Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2?

In 2015 Sega released Yakuza 0 from developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, and ushered in a new era of worldwide popularity for the long-running franchise. Two Yakuza Kiwami games have followed rebooting the series' first two titles, a new Yakuza featuring franchise protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, two spin-off Judgment games, and another sequel named Yakuza: Like a Dragon with a new protagonist and RPG gameplay. Now Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku appear primed to announce the next project continuing the Yakuza saga.

On September 8, Sega will host a short video confirmed to be coming from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The trailer's broadcast is titled "Sneak Peek Trailer Brought to You by the Director!" which while not confirming anything explicitly, hints at the announcement of the studio's next game. Expectations are that it will be the reveal of Yakuza: Like A Dragon 2.

As a start, a Yakuza: Like a Dragon sequel has already been officially confirmed, if not revealed. Longtime Yakuza chief producer and writer Masayoshi Yokoyama, now promoted to studio director, confirmed the Yakuza: Like a Dragon sequel's development in October 2021. Developer footage was also shared of the project in June. It confirmed that the new game would feature mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura, as well as a new destiny city that hasn't been featured in previous Yakuza games.

Also confirmed is that Yokoyama will be hosting the sneak peek, which given his long history with the Yakuza series, would imply the focus of the event is on the already announced Yakuza project. This may be a bit of a red herring, however, since Yokoyama is now studio head and is likely overseeing multiple projects. There's even been confirmation that a second project is in ongoing development at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, though it hasn't been officially unveiled in the same way as the next Yakuza game has.

To be clear, the new Yakuza game has been referred to not as Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2 by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. It's been dubbed Ryū ga Gotoku 8, but that has more to do with Japanese and English naming conventions for the franchise. It's unclear if Sega will publish the game as Yakuza 8 or Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2 at this point.

While Sega's sneak peek may or may not be Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2, fans of Yakuza and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's work are certain to be excited. The next game from the studio is getting nearer. Fans can tune into the broadcast, which will be in Japanese, September 8 at 4:00 AM PT/7:00 AM ET.

A new Yakuza game is in development.

Will there be a Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2?

Japanese gaming publication Famitsu has given us our very first look at Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2 — or whatever the sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon ends up being called. Despite being officially announced back in October of last year, we haven't seen anything of the sequel up until now. All we know for sure is that it'll once again star the lovable Ichiban Kasuga.

Anyway, Famitsu's off-screen shots show Ichiban (now with his hair tied back into a little ponytail) as well as returning characters Yu Nanba and Koichi Adachi. The fact that the game is suddenly being covered may suggest that a debut trailer is heading our way soon. It's starting to seem likely that it'll show up at Tokyo Game Show 2022, which is happening in September.

Famitsu also confirms that the game will feature Mikuru Asakura — a popular Japanese mixed martial artist. We don't yet know who Asakura will be playing, but as per the fighter's own video on the subject, he's in there. And of course, Asakura won't be the first sports personality to show up in a Yakuza game — the series already has a history of throwing professional wrestlers into the mix.

The story of Ichiban Kasuga isn't over yet.

Ichiban Kasuga in Yakuza: Like a Dragon

"I can't go into any details about Yakuza 8 yet," Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama said. "But I can reveal it will be a continuation of [Like a Dragon], set a few years later."

While Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has left the studio alongside director and producer Daisuke Sato, the series is continuing - there's a new Judgment, Yakuza, and original IP in the works, but interestingly enough, it looks like the fictional world will catch up with ours.

The 'first' Yakuza (chronologically) takes place in 1988, but Like a Dragon, which launched in 2020, is set in 2000 and 2019. However, the sequel will "be set in the present day for the year the game goes on sale." It will also follow the new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga.

"We will also take great care over the Judgment series," Yokoyama added, speaking to Famitsu. "Beyond Judgment, we would love to tackle an all-new game as well, once the pieces are in place. In addition to both Yakuza and Judgment, we are working on other unannounced titles too."

For context, Judgment and Yakuza take place in the same universe, but one has you stepping into the world of the Japanese Mafia while the other sees you playing detective. The two are also taking different approaches to combat. Judgment will keep the traditional Yakuza gameplay - real-time action. However, continuing on from Like a Dragon, the main Yakuza games will feature turn-based combat.

You can play Lost Judgment on PlayStation and Xbox, while Like a Dragon is available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Game Pass.

Will there be another Yakuza: Like a Dragon game?

Sega and RGG Studio have announced Like a Dragon 8, the next (newly rebranded) Yakuza series game, coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2024.

Will Like a Dragon have a sequel?

Like a Dragon 8 got a short teaser trailer showing protagonists Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu walking down a city street (in what appears to be Kamurocho). Ichiban looks as good as ever, while 50-something Kiryu is rocking a silver fox coif. We don't know anything about it except that it's due for release in 2024.

Will there be Yakuza 8?

And finally, on top of all of that, RGG Studio announced Yakuza 8 (also known as Like a Dragon 8 because what we call Yakuza in the West is known as Like A Dragon in Japan), featuring Ichiban Kasuga, hero of Yakuza: Like A Dragon and the return of the king himself, Kazuma Kiryu.

Is like a dragon the last Yakuza game?

It is set to be followed up by two games: a side story Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name in 2023, and the next mainline installment Like a Dragon 8 in 2024.
