In the 1800s, a serious outbreak took place killing thousands of people. This outbreak was called Scarlet fever. Although you don't hear about it now a days, it was known back then. The death rate for Scarlet fever was as at a minimum of one hundred thousand to as much as one hundred fifty thousand. This fever killing so many people is important because it's not a small amount. When it comes to that many people dying over a disease, something is needed to be done. Scarlet fever is a bacterial illness that develops in some people that have strep throat. The disease is very contagious. This fever can be transmitted by humans from the mouth and nose. Also, this can be spread easily by an infected individual coughing or sneezing in your presence In Frankenstein, Caroline Beaufort catches scarlet fever from Elizabeth. Caroline beaufort’s husband, Alphonse Frankenstein, suffers from the disease which he had carried from other events that took place in his life. Caroline becomes ill with the disease because she cares for Elizabeth and later becomes a victim of airborne respiratory. Airborne respiratory drops such as coughs or sneezes would have been some ways Caroline may had come in contact with the disease. Caroline may have even hugged or shook Elizabeth’s hand, this disease can be spread from skin to skin contact. Although Elizabeth recovers, Caroline dies from the illness. Scarlet fever is an illness you can catch by saliva, such as kissing. If you were to eat or drink after someone who has the illness, it is a possibility you could come in contact the the illness. It’s safest to keep utensils and drinking glasses of the infected person away from other family member silverware. Scarlet Fever is caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat.  Though it can be treated with antibiotics in contemporary times during Frankenstein's time period it was considered a very dangerous disease.

• Bright red color in the creases of the underarm and groin (Pastia's lines)
• Chills
• Fever
• General discomfort (malaise)

Scarlet Fever is an impactful disease that has been around for many centuries. While not all of those who have had it died as a result of scarlet fever, many greatly suffered. When Mary Shelley wrote her popular novel, Frankenstein, several of the characters in this book became affected from scarlet fever. Scarlet fever can occur in all ages, but there has been many cases specifically in children. One of the signs of scarlet fever is the appearance of a red colored rash. The rash is made up of red colored bumps. These red colored bumps continue to appear closer together, and eventually they will spread. Several days after the bumps, the skin will peel. In addition to the bumps, there might also be what is called “strawberry tongue.” Strawberry tongue is when there is a white coating on the tongue, and it turns red. In relation with the tongue swelling and turning red, there will also be symptoms of a sore throat and swollen glands. The tonsils, similar to the tongue, will have a white coating that may appear red. Another sign of scarlet fever is a fever. Cases of this epidemic were found worldwide, but it was mainly common in the United States and in Europe. There has been the repeated phrase that the scarlet fever during that time is still considered one of the most deadliest epidemics of disease. This epidemic spread all around the world, especially in rural areas. In the research of Stephan Curtis, he found that “In 1881 the scarlet fever mortality rate in the predominantly rural parishes was 4/1,000 compared with the 13/1,000 in the industrial parishes” (Curtis). Studies have shown that the scarlet fever affected many more people in rural areas. Since there was not the medical advancements we have today, scarlet fever was a more fatal disease in this time
