Which gas is used to fill weather balloons

At standard temperature and pressure, ammonia is less dense than atmosphere and has approximately 45-48% of the lifting power of hydrogen or helium. Ammonia has sometimes been used to fill weather balloons as a lifting gas. Because of its relatively high boiling point (compared to helium and hydrogen), ammonia could potentially be refrigerated and liquefied aboard an airship to reduce lift and add ballast (and returned to a gas to add lift and reduce ballast).

The other three gases are all heavier than air and therefore would not be used for weather balloons.

Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. The simplest pnictogen hydride, ammonia, is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. It is a common nitrogenous waste, particularly among aquatic organisms, and it contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to food and fertilizers.

Although common in nature and in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous in its concentrated form. It is classified as an extremely hazardous substance in the United States, and is subject to strict reporting requirements by facilities which produce, store, or use it in significant quantities.

Hint: Helium is an element in periodic table with atomic number 2 and it exists as gas and generally helium and hydrogen gases are used in the weather balloons which are used for weather forecasting. The main reasons for these gases lie in their properties like their reactivity and their density and weight.

Complete step by step answer:
In the question, Helium gas and its uses in weather balloons is asked and we should firstly know about weather balloons and then proceed to the answer.
-So, a weather balloon is a type of balloon which is sent in the atmosphere in the sky to know about the details of weather and its forecasting. So, it is generally used for weather forecasting and a small container-like package is fitted with this balloon which is the instrument used for performing these functions and it is called as radiosonde.
-Now since this balloon is going upwards in the sky, so either helium or hydrogen gas is used in these kinds of balloons. Generally, Helium gas is used in most of the balloons and major reason for this are: -
-Helium gas is lighter than air and it has lesser density as compared to the air. So, we observe that the balloon starts rising upwards and this is because of its less density than air i.e. about one eighth times lesser than air (hydrogen is also lighter than air).
-It is non-flammable and therefore does not react with air or surroundings or gets explode but hydrogen is the gas which is flammable and when it reacts with air, it explodes and becomes dangerous (this is the reason hydrogen is less used in balloons even though it is lighter than air).
-These were the main reason Helium is used in the weather balloons which are used for weather forecasting.

Note:
There are other gases also like Nitrogen which is used in scuba diving tanks, and those tanks contain gas mixed with nitrogen gas. So, there are other gasses also which are used specifically for some purposes and these are known to attempt similar types of questions as well.

Which gas is best for filling in balloons?

a) Helium is used to fill balloons..
It is an inert gas as it does not react with other substances..
It is non-flammable..
It is a lightweight gas and possesses low density..

Why hydrogen gas is used for fill weather balloons?

A balloon filled with hydrogen is used in meteorological balloons to study weather conditions because it is less dense than air. This makes it float and helps lift the balloon up in the air.

Do weather balloons use hydrogen?

Typically, we will fill the balloon with about 1400 grams of hydrogen. Here, the balloon is shown completely inflated. Attached to the balloon is the "train", which consists of a parachute and the instrument package (called a radiosonde).
