Do you tip gas station attendants in oregon

I know this has been brought up before but out of curiosity do you tip the gas attendant? I am a native Oregonian (47 years) and I have never tipped or have been guilted to tip until today.

I stopped at my neighborhood gas station (going there for over 10 years) and was asked if I wanted my windshield washed (they are a full service station). After I said yes (I don't usually but today I was driving a few hours and thought it might not be a bad idea) he starts to wash my window and begins to tell me that he has worked like 8 days in a row and the only thing keeping him going is the extra money and tips. I felt that he was hinting that I should be tipping him. I have no problems about tipping but for gas attendants I have always felt it wasn't necessary. Needless to say I didn't tip him.

So with that said - do you tip at gas stations? I am still feeling slightly guilty but as I mentioned I have been going there for a long time, have had my window washed before, and no request for a tip.

I'm a Washingtonian, but travel to Oregon often. I didn't even know tipping was allowed, so no (obviously), we've never tipped.

I haven't gone to a full service gas station in ages. However, I do remember my father always used one. For anything other than just pumping gas (checking the oil, washing windows, adding air to the tires) he tipped a minimal amount. This was a service he appreciated because he had a bad hip which made it painful for him to get in and out of the car.

I can't remember ever having someone pump my gas for me. Is the price of gas adjusted to pay for the person's wages? If so, I might tip a couple of bucks for the convenience. I hate getting gas.

Considering that it is against the law to pump your own gas, no, I have never tipped when we traveled to Oregon growing up from Washington State, nor any of the times that I have visited as an adult. I would not have tipped for washing my window either, because if they let you get out of your car at the gas station, I would be more than happy to do it myself!

We can't pump our own here. I think NJ and OR are the only states where there isn't self service. At times I would actually prefer to pump my own since I have to sit and wait for the attendant. And price wise we are usually close to what gas costs in WA where there is self service. I think our gas is typically on the higher end of the national average but I think that is tied more to the gas tax.

Jersey girl here. Never even considered tipping. But the first time I came back to NJ after moving to Georgia where I have to pump, I considered kissing him. 😀

Will someone let me know when America is great again? Thanks!

Because by law you can't pump your own gas in Oregon, no, I wouldn't even consider tipping.

Oregonian and nope, I don't tip. Not even if they wash the windshield (which they rarely do). I'd imagine they probably get a fair bit of tips from out-of-staters who think they're supposed to lol

Oregonian piping up...never have tipped. Never even crossed my mind. Never been guilted into it with a window washing.

Also, you can get out of your car. At least at the places I go. Sometimes I get out to empty trash, buy a quick soda, change drivers , etc. Maybe each place is different. Maybe I'm an outlaw!!...

No. Never. As one of the few states with attendants they may have encountered confused people who have tipped them and now feel it's their due.

We were in Oregon last week and bought gas but I had no idea until this thread that we weren't actually allowed to pump our own gas! Pretty sure my DH gave the attendant a tip but we may have been targeted for that because of our license plate.

I thought we in NJ were the only ones who had attendants who pumped the gas. They almost never wash the windows anymore, though, and the one time someone did that I gave him a dollar. I don't think it's a have-to, though.

I've never driven in OR, but I've driven in NJ plenty, and I've never tipped when I get gas there. It's not like I could pump the gas but want them to do it for the convenience---I don't have the option of pumping my own.

Post by breetheflea on Aug 21, 2017 4:06:57 GMT

It's actually kind of annoying when you are used to pumping your own gas, and then you can't.

Washington: drive up to open pump, pay, pump your gas, leave.

Oregon wait in line for an open pump, wait for someone to come over ask what you want and take your card, watch them push the button you could push yourself and stick the nozzle in, wait for the tank to fill, wait for the person to come back from 3 rows over so they can take the nozzle out of the car, wait for them to push the button for your receipt...

I prefer no lines and pumping my own gas... and I have never tipped.

And most gas stations in Oregon charge more if you use a card.

I estimate how many times we need to stop and carry enough cash for that.

Does the law extend to washing your own windshield? I could've sworn we've washed our own in Oregon and I'm also pretty sure they told us once that they just have to get the pump started & take care of the money but we were allowed to replace it and carry on. I do know you can get out of your car-- that was funny.

No - you can get out of your car and wash your window. The attendants might look at you a bit concerning if you get out as soon as you pull up because they think you may try to pump your own gas. And most places don't offer to wash your window anymore- this one happens to still offer.

And I ended up bringing the whole tipping/windshield thing up to my husband and he said he would have tipped since it was a service outside of pumping gas. I was a bit shocked since he is also long time Oregonian.

I was just in Oregon last week on vacation, and we were told by several people not to tip (our friends that live there, hotel employees, etc)

I had no idea that we had states you couldn't pump your own gas. I haven't seen a full service station since the 1970's.
