Where to watch This Film is Not Yet Rated

This Film Is Not Yet Rated looks at the film rating system in America, managed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and how it affects American culture. Specifically, it looks at the depictions of men and women, sexual content and violence in films, and the disparities between Hollywood and Indie movies, and between the ratings and the feedback films receive.

The documentary reveals many things about the MPAA, such as their harsher criticism of nonconventional sex acts, including LGBTQ content and how the NC-17 rating affects a film’s commercial and box office success, especially for smaller and indie filmmakers. It also investigates the organisation itself and reveals that raters for the board know nothing about child development or how the media works and that most of them either have no children or their children are over 18. This is despite the MPAA suggesting they only hire parents of children between ages 5-17.

Product description

In a rare and refreshing reversal of roles, filmmakers put the powerful Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA for short) under the microscope for inspection in Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick's incisive look at stateside cinema's most notorious non-censoring censors. Compelled by the staggering amount of power that the MPAA ratings board wields, the filmmaker seeks out the true identities of the anonymous elite who control what films make it to the multiplex. He even goes so far as to hire a private investigator to stake out MPAA headquarters and expose Hollywood's best-kept secret. Along the way, Dick speaks with numerous filmmakers whose careers have been affected by the seemingly random and sexual-content obsessed judgments of the MPAA, including John Waters, Mary Harron, Darren Aronofsky, Kevin Smith, Matt Stone, and Atom Egoyan.

3.0 out of 5 stars The strange world of Film Rating

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2018

American films are subject to ratings by an anonymous group of people, supposedly "average family Americans" , whereas many of them are directors of different corporations. This documentary tells an important story, but it takes a long time to do so and often comes across as an advert for sexy art house movies. These self-appointed censors clearly have a puritanical attitude to sex, but they purport to be protecting the public, when the public don't even know who they are, so not subject to public questioning.

But the most interesting fact for me is that the Pentagon censors every film about soldiers or the military, so that the present image of the "good American soldier" is never sullied or questioned. But we know from real documentaries about real wars that this not the case. It's logical that a man trained to kill and to obey orders is not necessarily a good and noble person. They cannot fail to be affected in many different ways by what they see and do in conflict.

4.0 out of 5 stars The invisible line between R and NC-17

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2017

American film censorship, concentrating on the line between the modern R rating and NC-17 (previously X), with brief examples of the material which push a film from the R category to NC-17. It shows the secret and sinister world of the MPAA ratings board, and how they operate. The only way the film maker could get any information on the people rating his film, and controlling who could see it, was to hire a private investigator. Since the ratings are deemed voluntary they are not subject to the kind of legal limits and controls that would apply to government imposed censorship - they can run the system any way they want without any checks or limits. A good film, but it helps if you already know something about the subject of film censorship, otherwise it is likely to be difficult to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars hypocrasy of american film censors

not a bad documentary , but rather too long and too american for me to really get into it . Discussing the idea of film censorship , what is suitable for children to watch , how so much of film making is so biased towards family entertainment and why violence is allowed more than sex. Not a bad documentary but not the wonderful movie that it wants to be .i found the private investigators very very borring and would have liked more clips from all the stuff we are not allowed to see.

Excellent doco for those interested in film censorship...or just the bizarre structures of power in the U.S.(particularly in the film industry)...This well structured little film manages to entertain and prove it's point at the same time. While there is no film censorship in the U.S. it seems that there is....and it's not about morality but cash and power...surprise...surprise.

Why is this film is not yet rated rated NC 17?

(Ironically, the original cut of "This Film is Not Yet Rated" received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA - due to its inclusion of sexual scenes that had caused other films to get NC-17s -- and was ultimately released in theaters, true to its title, without a rating.)
