Where the crawdads sing book age rating

The following is an honest review of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens and my suggested age rating.

Summary of Where the Crawdads Sing

Where the Crawdads Sing follows its main character Kya. Kya lives deep in the marshes of North Carolina with her family who, one by one, leave her to survive completely on her own. With nothing but instincts, she learns to live on the marsh by trading various things she finds there for necessities in town. Despite all this, she grows up lonely and longing for human interaction. Over time she befriends a boy and then another. These relationships never go the way she hopes and she begins to think she is destined to be alone.

Despite all her obstacles, she uses her knowledge of the marshland to make something of herself. Quickly her happiness is shaken when she finds herself at the center of a murder trial and the town’s prejudices against her on full display. Will Kya ever truly be free? Will everyone in her life only continue to leave her in some way?

Review of Where the Crawdads Sing

From the very first chapter I knew I was going to fall in love with this book. Delia Owens’ writing style is beautiful and poetic. Her words truly like a paint brush creating a world for its readers to be lost in. I was hooked from the beginning and stayed the entire time. I found myself feeling I was reading a memoir because Kya and the life she shared seemed just so real. This book cannot even really be categorized because it has everything rolled into it: drama, historical elements, romance, comedy, murder/mystery…..how is that even possible? And how from a debut author? I cannot gush enough about this book and even begin to capture how much I love it. This book had me thinking about it days after I finished it. It is everything a stand alone novel should be.

I rated this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads.

Age Rating for Where the Crawdads Sing

This book contains adult themes involving Kya’s family such as verbal and physical abuse and alcoholism. It also contains some language, violence, murder, and sexual content as well as an attempted rape. I would give this book a suggested age rating of 17+.

Good, but SHOCKED at the violence

This was an overall good movie with an a good storyline. But the amount violence in this ruined the entire thing. The main character is literally raped violently and graphically. It made me sick in my stomach to the point where i didn’t want to watch the rest. Even though the horrific act done by the man was horrible, it is used as an important part of the storyline. Other than that the movie was very good, but not recommended for younger viewers. As a fifteen year old myself, i wish I didn’t watch this movie this young.

Great for mature children or anyone over the age of 12

As someone who read the book I was pleasantly surprised when my friend informed me it would be a movie. I figured I could take the 13 year old i nannied for as long as her parents said it was ok. They said yes and we set off to the theatre. There were so many amazing powerful women ,such as Kya, in the movie. We both loved it and it was a very great thing to do on a blazing hot Oklahoma day! Amiright???

consider teens maturity

amazing movie!!! coming from an older teen- if a 13 year old (or younger teen) would see it just consider their maturity , since it does depict sexual instances (no nudity) and also an attempted rape. a few harsher swear words, not a distracting amount though. overall fantastic story and beautiful scenery. book is also fantastic!!!

DO NOT SCROLL !!! NEED TO KNOW!!!

This is an amazing film !! I’ve read the book and it could have been really different . There is two sex scenes and one attempted rape. There is also lots of fighting. I don’t really think age matters to much but that it comes down to the maturity of your child. I would recommend , based on the average maturity for the age, 14 or 13 years old . This is an fantastic movie and I plan on seeing it again !!

kept me entertained

i actually was really enthralled in this movie, though i will say if you’re triggered by sexual assault and domestic violence it’s probably a no-go. (however i’m triggered by SA and it didn’t get to me too much). overall really good movie. it also unearths how terrible the 50s and 60s were for women and girls.

Maturity is not a matter of age, but instead, of how you choose to respond and react to various life situations. It is essentially a level of mental development or wisdom that has a bearing on all areas of an individual's life, right from their conduct to their relationship with others. (Don't take this review down seriously!)

Great movie!

It was very true to the book, including the North Carolina marsh theme and the murder. There is some hitting, cussing, some sex scenes (a woman gets sexually assaulted one time), and drinking/partying, but overall I really liked it!

Depends rather on maturity

The movie was beautiful, from cinematography to acting, they did a great job. When it comes to the maturity rating, the movie contained some curse words yet they were quite delicate. There were a couple sex scenes but they were only from neck up, now if a child knows what is going on I do think it should be 13+ yet if someone is less mature when it comes to sex scenes I would say 15+ of course it depends on the child which means it’s harder to age rate such a movie. The Film contains themes of SA and domestic violence, I don’t think that such themes were presented very harshly but they were heavy through the end of the movie. Drugs weren’t a heavy topic only a cigarette or two present.

LOVED IT. (But…)

Ok. I am in love with this movie. The main character is so realistic and raw in this movie. It has an amazing storyline with such intriguing characters and relationships between characters. I would say that if you are easily triggered by abuse in any form, be cautious while watching as there is a lot of manipulation by some characters, attempted rape, and domestic violence (fully shown). But I loved the movie and loved the book as well and I think they did a great job at capturing that same energy from the book.

Why is Where the Crawdads Sing Rated PG 13?

There's multiple graphic scenes such child abuse, abuse, rape, sex, dead bodies, and violence that are too mature and inappropriate for kids.

Is there romance in the book Where the Crawdads Sing?

It also did not hurt that a good part of the book had a well-established romance. I'll attribute that to her being a woman, hence, she knows how to write the romantic details so convincingly.

Is the book Where the Crawdads Sing sad?

Where the Crawdads Sing is lovely, rich, sad, and powerful. It tells the story of Kya Clark, a girl who is abandoned at a very young age and yet manages to raise herself in the North Carolina marsh she calls home.

Is Where the Crawdads Sing a girl book?

Where the Crawdads Sing tells the fictional story of Kya, a girl left to raise herself along a North Carolina bayou in the 1950s and 60s. "The marsh girl," as she's known, is reviled and shunned by those in the nearby town.
