What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?

In this series, I ask various publishing professionals (including authors, bloggers, editors, agents etc.) to recommend 2-3 authors or books they feel haven’t received the recognition they deserve.

Today’s recommendations are by Brandon Sanderson!

Best known as the man who finished Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, Sanderson has written a number of books including Elantris, the Mistborntrilogy, The Alloy of Law, Warbreaker and The Way of Kings. He’s also written several books for younger readers, including his newest novels, The Rithmatist and the forthcoming Steelheart. Along with several other authors he hosts the Parsec Award winning and Hugo Award nominated podcast, Writing Excuses.

[Note: this message was transcribed from a recording by Mr. Sanderson specifically for this post.]

People often ask me to recommend books I feel deserve more attention than they’re getting. This is hard to do for two reasons. First, I have trouble deciding whether I should recommend the old standbys I’ve been recommending forever, or if I should recommend the new voices. And two, I just don’t know which books the everyday readers are chatting about. Before I was a writer, I was more in tune with what my friends would talk about. Nowadays, most of my friends are industry professionals, so I know what the industry professionals are talking about, but not what the average fan is reading.

With that preamble in mind, here are a few book recommendations, though perhaps people are talking about these books, and I just don’t realize it.

  1. I really do feel that Guy Gavriel Kay — his new work and his old — still doesn’t get enough recognition. He’s one of the great writers of the genre, and he’s amazing. His writing is beautiful, interesting, fun and exciting, but also lyrical. He has a series out right now. The first one is called Under Heaven, and the second one, River of Stars, just came out. If you’ve never read Guy Gavriel Kay, his classic Tigana is one I often recommend.
  2. I think N.K. Jemisin is doing some very fascinating things in fantasy right now. She’s a great storyteller. I do know that people in industry are talking about her a lot. I don’t know if your everyday fans are noticing her books enough, but certainly if you haven’t heard of her, look up The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. It is a fantastic novel. I will put a slight content warning on both Tiganaand The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, for those who are concerned about those sorts of issues.
  3. And one more recommendation. For a long time, my standby was Daniel Abraham, but I think everybody’s reading him now because he’s got these cool series coming out that everyone loves, so I’d like to point out a new author, Brian McClellan. He’s a former student of mine, who just had the first in a series come out with Orbit. The book’s called Promise of Blood, and it’s quite good. It’s a flintlock fantasy, where people are using magic mixed with gunpowder in really cool ways.

Stay tuned for the next post where we learn which authors Jim C. Hines thinks we should be reading more books by!

5 Comments on Recommended Reading by Professionals…with Brandon Sanderson!

Don’t we all love it when authors create an entire world for their readers? Likewise, one of these worlds is brought to us by the well-known author Brandon Sanderson in his cosmere. The cosmere is a fictional shared universe where several of Brandon Sanderson’s books take place. As a result, books set in the cosmere share a single cosmology and underlying rules of magic, and some characters from one world will make appearances on other worlds. So here are the best books by Brandon Sanderson:

#1 Elantris

About the Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Elantris

Title: Elantris

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science Fiction Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Fantasy

Pages: 657

Type: Standalone

Goodreads rating: 4.2/5

Elantris, the capital of Arelon, was once said to be a gateway to heaven. The person touched by the mysterious power of the Shaod was turned into a demigod having powerful magic, which they used for the benefit of all. The magical fantasies here make it one of the best books by Brandon Sanderson. Elantris city was beautiful, elegant, and radiant. Until one day, the magic failed, and what was considered a gateway to heaven now became the gateway to hell. Elantrians became powerless, and the magical city of Elantris turned into a filthy, crumbling mess. The Princess of Teod was to arrive at Arelon in the hopes of marriage. But, unfortunately, the prince she was supposed to marry is now an Elantrian. In this case, can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris, rediscover lost magic, and prevent the rebellion from happening?

Why do we recommend this book?

This book has an incredible plot. So don’t let the number of pages intimidate you. Once you start reading it, you won’t be able to stop. However, since it is Sanderson’s first published work, it is not as good as his other works. I recommend reading this book before reading his other famous work. In short, this book is perfect for someone just starting their journey of High Fantasy. It’s supposed to be a series but is currently standalone.

For thousands of years, ash fell from the sky. Skaa lived their lives in misery, fear, and poverty. The Lord Ruler was considered the ultimate power of being and reigned with absolute terror and invisibility. But, things are about to change when Kelsier, a broken skaa with the powers of the Mistborn, along with his band of misfits, comes together for the ultimate heist. The plan is to overthrow the Lord Ruler. Kelsier recruits the best underworld elite and comes along a ragged girl named Vin, who, like Kelsier, is a half-skaa with the powers of the Mistborn. Together, they will be the biggest heist in history, but will they succeed?

Why do we recommend this book?

After reading Elantris, this book will be the following line for cosmere reading order. Vin is one of the strongest female characters that I have ever read. The group is anything but perfect, and you still can’t help yourself and fall in love with them. The most remarkable thing about Brandon Sanderson’s books is their magic system. It is unlike anything you have ever read. Finally, a heist book with loveable characters, a unique magic system, and high stakes. What more can you ask for? Read it if you’re searching for the best books by Brandon Sanderson.

About the Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Warbreaker

Title: Warbreaker

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: High Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Standalone

Goodreads Ratings: 4.3/5

This story is about two sisters who are also Princesses, Vivenna and Siri. The elder sister, Vivenna, is trained all her life to marry the God-King and handle the politics of Hallandren’s court. But when the day finally comes, Siri, the carefree sister, is sent to marry the God-King. A world is transformed by BioChromatic magic, a power based on an essence known as breath. But these breaths can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. Miracles and mischief can be accomplished by using drag and drawing upon the color in everyday objects. However, can Siri, who doesn’t have any knowledge of the politics of the court, will be able to survive marrying the God-King.

In short, it is full of twists, mysterious people, reluctant heroes, and a talking sword.

Why do we recommend this book?

After reading Mistborn, this standalone is perfect for filling your hearts again with joy. This book’s magic system is like a breath of fresh air. Sanderson’s characterization is top-notch. He shows you that not everything is black and white; there are shades of grey also. The characters are relatable and funny. Sometimes, this book will even make you laugh out loud. And hey, moreover, this book seems to have a taking sword; how cool is this?

#4 Mistborn Era 2 Trilogy

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Mistborn Era 2

Title: Mistborn Era 2

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: High Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 3

Books in it: #1 The Alloy of Law, #2 Shadows of Self, #3 The Bands of Mourning

Goodreads rating: 4.3/5

This book takes place after 300 years of Mistborn Era 1 and is one of the best books by Brandon Sanderson. With the emergence of railroads, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds, the city of Scandriel is on the verge of modernity. Yet, although the city has witnessed many changes, the magic of Allomancy and Feruchmeny are still very much present. The Mistborn era 2 follows the story of detective Waximillium Ladrian, a rare Twinborn who can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After a family tragedy, Wax is forced to put his weapons aside and come back home and play the role of a perfect noble family. However, after a close-to-home attack, he wonders whether it was the right decision to keep his weapon aside?

Why do we recommend this book?

I don’t recommend reading this book series directly after Era 1 as these series are entirely different. These are shorter, more fast-paced, and more like detective stories. So it’s best to read it after Warbreaker. Waximillium and his friend Wayne are hilarious! You can’t help but fall in love with them. Sanderson’s best thing with this story is that he never changed or brought anything related to the first Mistborn Era here. It was so easy to separate the two worlds. Finally, it has a nice suspense element that makes it fast and easy to read.

#5 The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive 1)

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive 1)

Title: The Way of Kings

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 4

Books in it: #1 The Way of Kings, #2 Words of Radiance, #3 Oathbringer, #4 Rhythm of War

Goodreads rating: 4.7/5

Welcome to Roshar, a world of stone and storm. Since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, centuries have passed. Still, their Shardblades and Shardplate remain mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Wars were fought for the Shardblades and plates. This story follows multiple POVs: Dalinar Kholin, the bright lord of Alethkar, who, alongside the king, fights to avenge his brother Gavilar Kholin. Kaladin Stormblessed: son of a surgeon who left his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. Shallan: who tries her hardest to be Jasnah’s, Gavilar’s daughter’s apprentice, but hides an ulterior motive. In short, come to witness the ancient oaths being spoken again and the re-emergence of Knights Radiant.

Why do we recommend this book?

This book is a masterpiece. After reading every other book by Brandon Sanderson, you are now ready to enter this multi-pov and high fantasy book. This book has over 1000 pages but is skimmed that it never feels that long. Sanderson wrote this book for ten years. So, you can imagine how wonderful this is. The characters, the pacing, the plot, the twists, everything is spectacular. I loved every character, but Kaladin is my baby. However, with the help of Kaladin’s nature, Sanderson has represented PTSD in his book, which is appreciated. So, to sum up, forget about the pages; read this book!

#6 Words of Radiance(Stormlight Archive 2)

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Words of Radiance(Stormlight Archive 2)

Title: The Way of Kings

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 4

Books in it: #1 The Way of Kings, #2 Words of Radiance, #3 Oathbringer, #4 Rhythm of War

Goodreads rating: 4.8/5

This book continues from where we left off in The Way of Kings. However, the kingdom of Roshar is about to face even more danger than before. This book follows Shallan’s story of how she became who she is. Although it’s still a multi-pov story, the main focus of this book is on Shallan’s backstory. Moreover, follow Dalinar, Shallan, and Kaladan on their journey to save the world and witness the emergence of Knights Radiant.

Why do we recommend this book?

To summarize, this book is nearly impossible without spoiling the first book. After the ending of The Way of Kings, it’s impossible not to read this book. This book is longer than the Way of Kings but is packed with more challenges and character depth. In short, it is such a fast-paced ride. Sanderson has created a world where you will feel happy, sad, and frustrated with the characters as you go. Finally, it’ll keep you emotionally invested and praying that your favorite characters don’t die. And if you’ve read Sanderson, you know he doesn’t shy away from killing main characters.

#7 Edgedancer( Stormlight Archive 2.5)

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Edgedancer( Stormlight Archive 2.5)

Title: Edgedancer

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Novella

Pages: 272

Goodreads Ratings: 4.3/5

This novella follows Lift, the barely teenage nascent Knight Radiant who finds that time stands still for no one and is a treasure from the best books by Brandon Sanderson. The young Adish Emperor granted Lift a safe place to stay and kept her safe from a mysterious figure she calls Darkness. Lift reaches her powers, her Awesomeness, which she gains from eating food rather than the starlight. After being fed up with court life, Lift decided to follow Darkness, who is there hunting people like her, and hence the adventure begins.

Why do we recommend this book?

Lift gets introduced in Words of Radiance, leading to her own story in this novella. She is hilarious. All-day confusing people and eating pancakes. Lift is one of their favorite characters Sanderson. Finally, this novella is essential to read as it gives the in-between story of Words of Radiance and Oathbringer.

#8 Oathbringer( Stormlight Archive 3)

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Oathbringer( Stormlight Archive 3)

Title: Oathbringer

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 4

Books in it: #1 The Way of Kings, #2 Words of Radiance, #3 Oathbringer, #4 Rhythm of War

Goodreads rating: 4.6/5

Continuing right where Words of Radiance ended, this book increases the stakes tenfold. Every book focuses on a specific character, and in this case, the book focuses on Dalinar’s backstory. As Dalinar’s past comes to light, you get to see the real Blackthorn. As the enemy forces rise, everything they believe in is ending. However, they all would have to rise to the challenge and fight for the safety of their loved ones and the world itself.

Why do we recommend this book?

Dalinar is the epitome of discipline, but you get to see the younger Dalinar who just wanted a fight. Sanderson created a fantastic redemption arc for Dalinar because, to be honest, I hated the youthful Dalinar. You see so much character growth as the plot progresses. One of the most incredible powers of Sanderson is creating character interactions so good that you love each moment of it. This is the book where you have to pay attention because those easter eggs we talked about are about to start. So many characters from various books cross over in this one, so pay great attention to details.

#9 Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection

Title: Arcanum Unbounded

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Short story collection

Goodreads rating: 4.5/5

This short story collection comprises tales from all the worlds Sanderon created in his cosmere, such as Elantris, Warbreaker, Mistborn, and some new short stories. Arcanum Unbounded: TheCosmere Collection brings together tales spanning the known limits of Sanderson’s universe along with charts, illustrations, and notes. And secrets. These exciting short stories will transport you back to the worlds that you left behind and will disclose its secret. Moreover, don’t miss the best books by Brandon Sanderson.

Why do we recommend this book?

I always thought that Brandon Sanderson would shine only in a full-length novel format, but he proved wrong. And I am so glad that he did. His story stories are well written, and some of the short stories will reveal new secrets, and you’ll get to see everything in a new light. Thus it’s a must-read from the best books of Brandon Sanderson.

#10 Dawnshard(Stormlight Archive 3.5)

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Dawnshard(Stormlight Archive 3.5)

Title: Dawnshard

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Novella

Goodreads rating: 4.5/5

Pages: 171

This novella, just like Edgedancer, takes place between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War. After discovering a ghost ship whose crew are presumed dead, Navani Kholin sends an expedition to find out whether the island has fallen into enemy hands or not. The biggest threat for the crew to be sent is to uncover the island’s secret and come back out alive, as no one is believed to have taken it back alive from Akinah. If the crew fails to discover the island’s secrets before the wrath of its ancient guardians falls upon them, the fate of Roshar and the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance. Suspense has always been part of the best books of Brandon Sanderson.

Why do we recommend this book?

This book focuses on one of my favorite characters from Bridge Four, none other than Lopen. Lopen and Rhys’s character development is so well done that I could feel the same way that the character was feeling. Not only character developments, but this novella also sheds light on many of Cosmere hints and revelations. This made the cosmere a little more understandable, and I loved it.

#11 Rhythm of War(Stormlight Archive 4)

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
Rhythm of War(Stormlight Archive 4)

Title: Rhythm of War

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Science fiction Fantasy, Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 4

Books in it: #1 The Way of Kings, #2 Words of Radiance, #3 Oathbringer, #4 Rhythm of War

Goodreads rating: 4.6/5

The recently released Rhythm of War continues a year after Oathbringer ended. This book focuses on our supposed enemy, the Parshendi, and is one of the best books by Brandon Sanderson. It looks so much concentrated on Eshonai and her sister Vennli. In a similar fashion to the previous three books, Rhythm of War starts with a prologue that shows the Assassination of King Gavilar; this time, we get to witness the event from the POV of Navani. See from the POV of the enemy and figure out which side you are on.

Why do we recommend this book?

Do I even need to say this? The characters. I would die for some of these characters. The most fun I had with this book was figuring out which character has hopped from previous books. This book has the most Easter Eggs, and it is so fun figuring it out. One of the unique things about this series is that it not only focuses on heroes but also shows you the other side. Let’s see how the enemy became the enemy. Villains created by Sanderson are also so well-fetched. They are not muscle-twirling villains, but the plot and manipulation to get what they want. Please do yourself a favor and read the best books by Brandon Sanderson.

#12 White Sand Vol 1-3

About The Book

What is Brandon Sanderson favorite books?
White Sand Vol 1-3

Title: White Sand

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Graphic Novel, Science fiction Fantasy

Publisher: Tor Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 3

Books in it: #1 White Sand Vol. 1, #2 White Sand Vol. 2, #3 White Sand Vol.3

Goodreads rating: 3.6/5

On the planet of Taldain, sand masters possess incredible powers that help them control sand. This story follows Kenton, a student who wants to learn these arcane powers. But, unfortunately, it is the weakest. When all the Sand Masters are slaughtered, and Kentor is the sole survivor, he has to figure out a way to protect himself and try to become the best in his powers. With enemies closing in on all sides, Kenton forges an unlikely partnership with Khriss – a mysterious Darksider who hides secrets of her own.

Why do we recommend this?

This book is the least liked book among the Cosmere fans, and I agree. The art is fine, but the story is mediocre at best. However, if you want to read this to understand some of the hidden references in other books, you can. Even if you don’t read this book, that is entirely okay. You won’t be missing much.

P.S.: This volume 3 book is available on Kindle Unlimited. If you have subscribed to it, then you can read this book for free.
