No-one bothered to replant them. I am determined to do my bit for restoring them into protected forests and gardens. Mark O'connor 8y ago O\'connor , ACT, Australia, Australia Toona ciliata - Red Cedar Try enclosing the tip in stocking mesh (panty hose) until the top gets too high to reach by ladder. After that, when the mesh finally perishes, the tree may be vulnerable. But at least it won't fork close to the ground. greg2 ★★★★ 11y ago , to try and overcome cedar tip moth problem as a challenge Paul Muller 12y ago Finch Hatton, QLD Toona ciliata - Red Cedar There is a moth that attcks the Red Cedar's new growth- which forses the tree to fork. This makes them unsuitable to try and grow as a forestry tree for the purpose of harvesting the timber. They need to be grown under the canopy of larger tree's. In its native habitat, it can reach up to 200 feet tall and live for hundreds, and even thousands, of years. The Western red cedar growth rate is fast, up to 2' per year.
What is the best time of year to plant a cedar tree?Cedar trees, like other tree species, are best transplanted in early fall, late winter or early spring. While potted trees can technically be planted at any time of the year, planting during the hottest part of summer requires careful monitoring of the soil using a soil moisture meter so the tree doesn't wilt and die.
How much does Australian red cedar cost?Australian Red Cedar is now commercially extinct, but limited quantities are sometimes available from salvaged trees. It is a curious price list in that prices per cubic metre remain unchanged at between $8,000 and $10,000 per cubic metre for thicknesses up to 50mm.
How long does Australian red cedar take to grow?We know that in the appropriate climate they are fast growing. Mahogany and cedar trees can grow in height almost several metres a year and so by 25-30 years will have reached considerable height and diameter.
