Mounting Samsung Frame TV over fireplace brick

With Samsung’s Frame TV, customers now have a variety of options to discretely integrate a television into a living space without disrupting the aesthetics of the room. This is an exciting new option for customers who previously were turned off by the thought of a TV above their fireplace or in their kitchen. The Samsung Frame also serves as a beautiful picture frame displaying famous art pieces with nice mattes or your favorite photos. When the TV is “off” it goes into ambient art mode, displaying artwork of your choosing (monthly subscription for around $5 with the Samsung art store for many choices), or your favorite photos which you can load onto a usb memory stick and attach to the TV’s OneConnect box.

With all of these exciting options, the Samsung Frame also poses new questions and challenges on how exactly to install and integrate this TV into your home. We’ve tackled over 50 of these Frame installs and have developed a great knowledge of how to do this, and we’d like to share that with you!

What do I do with the OneConnect Box?

Great question, we’ve come up with a few best practices here. To keep the Samsung Frame tight to the wall with zero clearance, Samsung has moved all of the ins/outs, power cord, and “brains” off the main TV display and on to a separate piece called the One Connect box. It’s kind of the size of a small cable box. That’s where you connect all the HDMIs and power cords etc. The box connects to the Samsung TV via a 15’ OneConnect cable that carries all the data signals as well as power to the display! For an extra few hundred dollars, you can purchase a 50’ OneConnect cable for longer runs. Here are our two favorite options for dealing with the OneConnect Box:

  1. Hide the One Connect box behind the TV

This is what we usually do, we cut in a large recessed in wall box big enough to house the OneConnect box which has a knockout for a new power outlet. This works great if you’re streaming only. If you have a cable box, you will NOT be able to hide it behind the TV, as the heat from the box will eventually cause it to malfunction as there’s no where for the air to escape. You’ll still need to snake an HDMI somewhere else back to your cable box and other components if needed.

2. Hide the OneConnect cable in plastic wire molding (or in wall if your local building codes allow).

We have not been able to confirm or deny if the OneConnect cable is rated for in wall wiring or not. Our distributor says it is according to Samsung, but we’ve not seen anything in writing. Consult with your local building codes before running anything in wall. If you are allowed to run it in wall, it’s a nice thin easy to run cable. If you leave it outside the wall it’s also pretty transparent and doesn’t look bad at all. Then you can just put your OneConnect box somewhere else.

What color is the frame?

The Frame TV comes with a pretty standard looking dark grey bezel. You can add for additional cost a customization frame in a variety of finishes and colors that snaps on to the TV itself. It really helps it look like an actual picture frame.

What about the mount?

The Frame TVs come with their own mount, it hangs almost like a picture frame, just three screws with heavy duty anchors or if you’re lucky you can grab a stud, but the mount pattern is very small so you may not. The TV is very light so it should be OK with the provided anchors.

Leave us a comment below if you’ve attempted this install or have any clues on the OneConnect cable being in wall rated! We’d love to see pictures of your final install! Let us know if we can answer any questions!

Samsung Frame TV Installation

Due to the increase of Samsung smart TV sales, we have been fortunate to install and provide you our personal experience with our Samsung Frame TV Installation. Last week we installed our second Samsung Frame TV, this time onto a brick fireplace. This 55-inch Samsung Frame TV came without the 4 standard mounting holes in the back so we had to use the Samsung frame TV wall mount supplied by Samsung.

The Frame TV wall mount easily attaches to the back of the tv with the small screws supplied in the kit. The wall mounting bracket easily attaches to the tv by sliding onto a rod and snaps into place but there is no room to slide the tv left or right after putting the tv onto the bracket. The wall mounting bracket comes with several holes to attach to the studs or mounting surface but as a professional installer I can see the inexperienced or do it yourself tv installer having problems centering the tv perfectly on the wall, particularly a stone or brick fireplace where the lines may not be even. If the bracket holes don’t line up perfectly to catch two studs, (which most times they won’t), an inexperienced installer will be forced to mount the tv off center for stability.
We were able to use a tape measure to convince our customer that their Samsung Frame Smart TV was perfectly centered but he was smart enough to see the potential problems for himself.

The first Samsung Frame TV installation we did was a 65 inch 4k TV over a prewired fireplace. The TV came with the 4 standard mounting holes in the back so you can use a standard wall mount over the Frame TV mount to make installation easier but our customer insisted that we use the Frame TV mount. Samsung also supplied 2 spacers with the mounting kit to space the bottom of the TV away from the wall. Our customer wanted the TV completely flat on the wall as he had seen in several Samsung Frame TV installation videos on You Tube. The problem with this was the One Connect box, the length of the One Connect cable, and the lack of a recessed AC outlet. Since the fireplace was pre-wired and the One Connect cable was not long enough, the One Connect box had to go behind the TV to connect to the cable box to the pre-wired HDMI port. The pre-wired HDMI port along with the AC outlet made the TV have to sit about an inch or two from the wall. We used the 2 spacers to balance and level the TV.

The only way to have the Samsung TV sit completely flat on the wall with its supplied wall mount is to run the One Connect cable inside the wall and install a recessed AC outlet. The One Connect box and the Samsung Frame TV both require power. Both power cords have 90 degree bends at the end but will make the TV sit awkwardly away from the wall if plugged into a normal AC outlet. Since the One Connect cable is so thin and expensive, running it in the wall should be avoided or done with extreme care.

Can you hang a Samsung frame TV on a brick fireplace?

Can you mount a TV on a brick wall? Absolutely. But mounting a TV on brick does take more preparation, knowledge, and tools than installing one on drywall.

Can you hang a Samsung frame TV above a fireplace?

We do not recommend mounting your TV over a fireplace. Your primary concern will be the heat; Samsung TVs should never exceed 104°F. Before you even think of mounting a TV above your fireplace, light a fire and check the temperature first.

Can you mount TV on brick fireplace?

Mounting a TV always requires special equipment, no matter what type of wall you use. Mounting a TV above a brick fireplace requires masonry bits and a hammer drill to get the job done.

Can you mount a frame TV on stone?

Usually, a facade or veneer stone wall will have studs behind it, which likely means simple lag bolts can be used for mounting through the wall to the studs. However, if the stone is real, a proper concrete anchor, sleeve anchor, or masonry anchor will be needed for the tv wall mount installation.
