But the Texas-based ice cream company has tried. Over the weekend, Blue Bell tried to melt Muehl’s months-long crusade to push the company to sell her favorite flavor year-round by sending her an ice cream koozie and a few pleasant emails. Blue Bell has even sent her a scooper and some coupons.

But this 25-year-old Schertz woman, who has gone to extraordinary measures in recent months, has only one request: Sell the seasonal Krazy Kookie Dough Ice Cream flavor permanently.

Muehl discovered Krazy Kookie Dough last summer during the height of Texas’ second COVID-19 wave. She was pregnant with Flynn, her first child. The New Braunfels office assistant was overcome with a craving for something sweet but didn't want to risk a trip to the grocery store.

But when she couldn't take it anymore, she sent her husband John to Walgreens.

Over the phone, John read every ice cream label in sight.

The “flavorful cake batter ice cream loaded with sugar cookie dough pieces in bright shades of green, blue and pink” was the only description that sounded good to his pregnant wife.

She immediately fell in love.

“This is the best thing in the world,” Muehl said, recalling the ice cream's smooth buttery texture and cookie dough pieces that taste like Lucky Charms.

"I had to get more," Muehl said.

She searched her local H-E-B and other grocery stores and found the Krazy Kookie Dough difficult to find because it didn't stay in store freezers long.

Introduced in 2013, the seasonal flavor is one of the company's 40 or so rotating flavors and is only available for six months out of the year.

Muehl emailed Blue Bell to ask about the flavor's return. The company told her it would be back this summer.

Last month, Muehl found a single pint at the store.

“I had these simultaneous feelings of overwhelming sadness and joy, knowing that it was the last one,” she said.

That's when John suggested she start an online petition.

What started as a joke quickly became serious.

In her Change.org petition, Muehl wrote: “I’m sick of rocky road, and Cherry Garcia. I’m sick and tired of the cookies and cream and cheesecake flavors.”

She added: “Krazy Kookie Dough is the most unique and wonderful ice cream flavor. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself. But act quick! It’s only here for a little while. But WE CAN CHANGE THAT.”

Muehl posted her petition on several communities on Reddit. Initially, Muehl thought she would be voted down to the bottom of the page or laughed off the platform. But she received overwhelming support, even from those who just admired her enthusiasm.

“Don’t care about the ice cream but I like when someone follows their goals,” one user wrote.

Not long after, her efforts were profiled in Texas Monthly. Days after the story published, and almost a thousand signatures later, Muehl sent the petition to Blue Bell.

“No matter how this ends up, I am touched by the amount of support my absurd battle for ice cream has gained,” she wrote on July 26. “After a year like 2020, it feels like the world is going Krazy. At times we all feel so divided and isolated. This silly petition has reminded me how easily people really can come together. I am overwhelmed by the number of people who were willing to help a complete stranger fight for something so silly just because she reached out for help.”

As of  Wednesday morning, Muehl’s petition has gained 1,165 signatures.

In an email to the Express-News, a spokesperson for Blue Bell said that the company loves to hear from customers and that it takes their suggestions seriously.

“We wish we could make more flavors and products, but we are limited by a number of factors, including the amount of display space we are allowed in stores,” the company said.

Blue Bell went on to say that the company has produced over 300 different flavors, and its current production capacity allows for it to produce about 40-45 flavors each year, so determining a flavor program can quickly become “a fun but challenging task.”

The rotational flavor program was created as a way to best utilize the limited number of machine hours available while bringing as many great flavors as possible to market.

In the next few days, Muehl said she plans to resend the petition, this time with more signatures.

To Muehl, 2020 and 2021 have been particularly challenging.

It's a year and a half that has tested the strength of basic institutions, friendships and family relationships and demanded so much sacrifice in the face of a raging pandemic.

"It does sound silly to fight for an ice cream flavor, but when the world is in the state that is has been in, divided as it has been, the little things become so much more apparent, even if it is an ice cream flavor," Muehl said.
