Is the Notre Dame game sold out?

When you look at Notre Dame’s home slate in 2021, the list of opponents is fairly impressive. So, tt may come as a bit of a surprise which game sold out first.

It wasn’t the “Greatest Intersectional Rivalry” in college football. Tickets for the USC game remain. And it wasn’t the date with potential No. 1 pick Sam Howell and the North Carolina Tar Heels that sold out first.

Instead, the Cincinnati Bearcats on the first weekend of October sold out first.

Initially one would look at Notre Dame’s biggest rival and probably North Carolina as the two most likely to sell out first. However, Cincinnati makes a ton of sense when you consider it’s been a top-10 or -15 program in recent years, it is coming off a New Year’s Six appearance, it is within driving distance of South Bend and the Bearcats have never played in Notre Dame Stadium.

Then factor in the storylines of Cincinnati being the former employer of Brian Kelly, Marcus Freeman and Mike Mickens and it makes even more sense.

SOUTH BEND – College football’s second-longest active sellout streak will end Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium.

Despite a traditional matchup between ranked teams in No. 16 Notre Dame and No. 21 Navy, this will be the end of a 273-game sellout streak that stretched back four and a half decades. The last non-sellout at home for the Fighting Irish was on Thanksgiving Day 1973 against Air Force.

Since 1964, that remains the only non-sellout at Notre Dame Stadium in 322 games. Nebraska’s run of 373 home sellouts remains the top active streak.

“Based on ticket sales through Wednesday, we do not anticipate sellouts for our games against Navy and Boston College,” Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. “That this comes during a time of sustained success for our football program reflects both challenges impacting the ticket market nationwide and the unique dynamics of this year’s schedule.”

In an interview with the South Bend Tribune, Swarbrick cited three home football games this November – including a Nov. 2 game against unranked Virginia Tech – as a factor in the streak’s end. This is only the fourth November with three home games since the stadium expanded its capacity from 59,075 in 1997.

Current stadium capacity is 77,622.

In five of the past 10 seasons, Notre Dame has had just one November home game. In 2018, it hosted Florida State on Senior Night while making trips to Northwestern, Yankee Stadium (Syracuse in the Shamrock Series) and USC.

Saturday’s forecast in South Bend is for a high of 37 and a low of 26. Navy (7-1) and Notre Dame (7-2), playing for the 93rd consecutive season, will meet with both teams ranked by the Associated Press for the first time since 1967.

“We will continue the tradition of making Notre Dame Stadium a destination for generations of Fighting Irish students, alumni and fans while providing the best possible atmosphere for our student-athletes,” added Swarbrick, Notre Dame’s AD since 2008.

Notre Dame has the fourth-longest active home winning streak in college football. Only Clemson (21), Central Florida (20) and Ohio State (19) have won more consecutive games at home than the Fighting Irish, who began a 16-game streak after a narrow loss to Georgia in September 2017.

Swarbrick told the South Bend Tribune that group sales were a “big part of keeping the streak going” with local businesses taking up the slack at times. The secondary ticket market online and a far-flung fan base were additional challenges, making this week’s news a potential outcome Notre Dame anticipated “a year and a half ago,” Swarbrick said.

Under a three-tiered flex pricing system, tickets for the Navy game ranged from a face value of $45 for the upper end zone to $200 for preferred seating. That range bumps up to $65 to $250 for the final home game against Boston College with only the USC game on Oct. 12 rating a range of $95 to $300.

More sections were added to economy pricing tier this season, but the pricing overall has essentially been the same the past three seasons.
