I'm a 4th year medical student, studying for Step 2 CK. I bought this book when I first started rotations, figuring I could use it alongside them as a brief review. Since I'm relatively lazy, I saw this was the thinnest of the review books and decided it was perfect for me. However, I also know that test scores are extremely important and decided this wasn't enough. I've went through it once, along with First Aid for CK and Master the Boards. So I feel I can give a pretty fair idea about what book to use.

This book is concise. That is by far the best thing about it. At only a little over 300 pages total, it's the lightest review book you'll find. However, don't be deceived. Compared to Master the Boards, which has a large text and many tables inside, Step Up to Step 2 is written with smaller, more densely packed text. Despite being physically larger, Master the Boards was as quick, if not a quicker, read than Step Up to Step 2. This book does do a pretty good job at covering all the topics. It flows pretty well with U World, and if you're into using the DIT videos, this is what they go by.

For someone who wants to focus on one source AND does not plan on using DIT videos, I would say this is the third best book out of the 3 I used. Master the Boards does a better job at pointing out key, frequently tested facts, as well as doing a better job at teaching the best initial and most effective diagnostic test and treatment for each disease, which is an important part of the CK exam. I would say the 8th edition First Aid for CK is a close 2nd behind Master the Boards. It covers virtually everything you'll see in U World and covers some areas (like Peds) better than other texts. However, it is a longer read than both Master the Boards and Step Up. Many reviews will bash First Aid for CK, but make sure to see when that review was written and/or what edition it is referring to. The new, 8th edition First Aid is a vast improvement over the previous editions.

Step Up to Step 2 is a good review book, but not the best in my opinion.

really new to the whole step 2 prep process

kept hearing that step up to med was the new fa for step 2, and then blueprints for everything except surgery to use during rotations

but now im hearing more about step up to step 2 book. like whats up with that

apparantly step up to step 2 is the "real" prep book for step 2

while step up to medicien is more for only internal shelf?

I kinda thinkin buying both would be waste of time, what books should i buy now

how many people are doing the year long uworld thing, i have to take step 2 prolly within 9 months, so seemed like waste to do year long subscription given might not actually use it til test is closer

but isnt there some value to studying outright and saving valueable world questions until the last 2 months before exam for dedicated study time, and maybe just use wikiprep or kaplan right now??

I was previously just forcing myself to automatically take step 2 in time to send scores for residency to be strategic, but in actuality, this is only strategic if you do well. I have a medicore score by sdn standards, at a 98/228.

How much will it actually help if I can pull a 240-250 on step 2, because instead of taking time out to study for step 2, and run the risk of not improving my app by scoring the same, I can actually do another 2 months of good rotations and a notable site and possibly add another letter or something

If your really trying to destroy this thing then i recommend step up to medicine. You will find some of the same charts etc in step up to step 2, however it lacks the detail needed to get those very difficult questions correct.

In short. FA, and Crush will help you get right the questions that everyone else gets right.

Step up to medicine will help you get those harder questions that others miss, therefore increasing your score

Best of luck.

I saw Step Up to Medicine for the first time last week and was fairly impressed with the stuff it went over. It's similar to Step Up to Step 2, but goes into some other details. Seems like a useful book. I used Step Up to Step 2 and enjoyed the read (it's got some similarities to First Aid, but is better organized). Either one is good for info. The true key for any Step (in my opinion) is just questions, questions, questions.

IN THE DISSCUSSION OF STEP UP TO STEP 2 VERSUS STEP UP TO MEDICINE

people were arguing the superiority of step up to medicine with details

but is it true

THAT STEP UP TO STEP 2 HAS OBGYN, PEDS, SRUGYER, PSYCH, ETC ETC

in a SHORTER BOOK

while STEP UP TO MEDICNIE LACKS THESE SUBJECTS??

please advise,

are the topics covered reasonably well in step up to step 2, are they covered better than step up to medicine at least??
