(James 5:16b) Those two Bible verses perfectly encapsulate what this film is all about, in a way that the 1990's remake (which I grew up with) was not. More generally, it is a good example of the difference between old-school and modern Disney. Once upon a time, Disney stood for and provided wholesome entertainment that promoted family values and moral uplift. Now they just seek to provide entertainment for its own sake (or other things which I don't need to elaborate). And it's not new. This has been going on for at least 30 years. All that aside, I found this film to be outstanding. It is simple, yes, and the conclusion is telegraphed from the very beginning, but it understands that a child's sense of wonder and ease of belief are laudable things that should be protected instead of dismissed out of hand or reasoned away. It also shows the possibility and power of redemption. All of these are reason enough for me to return to this again instead of the remake, entertaining as it may be.
