Land Rover on Friday introduced the Range Rover SV Carmel Edition as part of the annual Monterey Car Week festivities. Limited to just 17 examples, each one of these super-SUVs will set owners back a hefty $345,000.

So, what do you get for all that scratch? It starts with a body covered in satin bronze paint, with dark gray 23-inch wheels featuring bronze inserts. Unique puddle lamps give the Carmel Edition a little extra panache, too.

The interior really sets things off, though. Here, you'll find the SV's most luxurious layout -- the SV Signature Suite offers just four seats, with a massive console running down the middle, and it has an electrically operated table tucked away inside. An integrated refrigerator houses Dartington Crystal glassware, while white ceramic controls and satin white finishers zhush things up even further. The full leather interior features blue front seats and brown rear seats.

But the car itself isn't the only thing that $345,000 will get you. Buying a Range Rover SV Carmel Edition also earns you two custom golf club fittings at Titleist's Performance Institute, complete with two full sets of clubs. In addition, Land Rover is donating some of the proceeds of each sale to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. So, you get some feel-good vibes to go with all that luxury, too.

The Land Rover Range Rover is an icon not only in the off-road world but in the luxury SUV world. It’s an SUV that wears both of these hats well with little compromise. It’s full of rich materials and premium features while offering a strong range of engines, standard 4-wheel drive, and outstanding off-road capabilities.

The Range Rover is one of the most customizable SUVs you can buy. On top of the four available trims, there are two wheelbases, three seating configurations, three engine options, and a seemingly infinite list of options for interior materials, tech features, off-road kit, and so much more. Even the most particular tastes can find a Range Rover to love but at a price.

It’s hard to ignore the rather exorbitant price tag of the Land Rover Range Rover. Yes, you’re paying for a flagship luxury SUV, but the Range Rover is expensive even by those standards. The biggest and most loaded SUVs from rival luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, and Lincoln are more affordable by a considerable margin. However, if only a Range Rover will do, the six-digit starting price is worth it.

New this year is the Range Rover P440e, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that offers a manufacturer-estimated electric driving range of 48 miles. There’s also a new 2023 Range Rover SV, the most exclusive and luxurious model available. The exquisitely detailed SV has curated design themes that allow a high degree of personalization.

If you want a high-status luxury SUV that’s comfortable on-road and capable on-road and you have a big budget, then the Range Rover is worth a look.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Pricing

Even by luxury SUV standards, the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover is very expensive. The base price is $104,500 for the short-wheelbase P400 SE. The long-wheelbase 7-seat model starts at $110,500. The Autobiography trim begins at $157,600 for the short wheelbase and $159,600 for the long wheelbase. The First Edition starts at $164,000 for the short wheelbase and $169,400 for the long wheelbase.

The new Range Rover plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the P440e, has a starting price of $108,400, while the Range Rover SV begins at a lofty $193,100.

Indeed, the Land Rover Range Rover is one of the most expensive luxury SUVs on the market. Almost all of its rivals, including the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and the American options like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator have much lower starting prices. One option in this class with good off-road capabilities is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which is also cheaper than the Range Rover.

Driving the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover

The Range Rover upholds its reputation as a luxury SUV that’s supremely comfortable in everyday driving without compromising its legendary off-road capabilities. Thanks to its standard air suspension, on paved roads the Range Rover cooly glides along and keeps you in a quiet and comfortable sanctuary.

It’s also remarkably composed during off-road driving, as we discovered during a test drive of both the turbocharged inline-6 and twin-turbo V8. You can’t defy the laws of physics in a vehicle as large and heavy as the Range Rover, of course. There is some body lean during hard cornering, though it’s far less than you’d imagine.

The electronically controlled anti-roll system mitigates much of the body roll found in earlier generations of the Range Rover. Meanwhile, all-wheel steering makes it more agile and easier to park than you might expect for an SUV this size.

Off-road purists might scoff at this generation’s switch to a part-time all-wheel-drive system. Compared to permanent AWD, it improves fuel economy, but the Range Rover is still an excellent off-roader.

Speaking of fuel economy, the inline-6 is the clear winner when it comes to gas mileage, though neither it nor the V8 are frugal in their drinking habits. The V8 has incredible acceleration to help justify its thirst, though we found the inline-6 provides has plenty of pace and is smoother to drive. The instant-on power of the V8 makes it a little jerky when you simply want to cruise along without making a scene.

The capability is still all there for the few Range Rover drivers who actually venture off-road, and six available drive modes assist it. An available Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack improves the Range Rover’s capabilities with an active electronic differential, electronic air suspension with dynamic response, and configurable programs.

Whether owners will risk dirtying their pricey Range Rovers is another matter. For anyone bold enough to try, this SUV remains tenacious while crossing mud, snow, sand, or rocky terrain.

Interior Comfort

Even the highest standards of automotive luxury will be met or exceeded by the posh interior of the Range Rover. The material quality is top-notch, with plush leather seats and rich wood trim adorning the interior of most Range Rover models. More eco-friendly materials, like wool and other textiles, are available if you’re willing to trade some luxury for sustainability. There are enough individual interior options to make your head spin, so you can tailor your Range Rover precisely to your tastes.

There are three seating configurations available in the Range Rover. The short-wheelbase models have seating for five or four, while the long-wheelbase models can be had with four, five, or seven seats. There’s also an “Event Suite” option, which adds little seats to use in the cargo area while the Range Rover is parked.

Seating is comfortable for everyone inside the Range Rover. There’s plenty of legroom for all occupants, including in the third row. There’s also plenty of cargo space to boot, especially in the long-wheelbase models.

As you’d expect, the Range Rover SV is equipped with top-grade materials, be they plated metals, smooth ceramics, sustainably sourced woods, soft leathers, or sustainable Ultrafabric.

Of note: SV Serenity and SV Intrepid design themes can be specified for the Range Rover SV interior. The same is true for the Range Rover exterior, but you can order an SV, for example, with the SV Serenity exterior and a standard interior. You can also get the SV Serenity (or SV Intrepid) design themes applied to the vehicle as a whole.

Exterior Styling

The exterior of the Range Rover strikes an excellent balance of premium and rugged. Its sleek lines and sharp light signature make it look luxurious, but its boxy profile and a few distinctive design touches inspired by the past give it the toughness of a Range Rover. It has the “floating roof” design that makes it look like a modern luxury SUV that looks good in any paint color.

There are many exterior options for the Range Rover, so you can make it your own. There are tons of paint and wheel options, plus a Shadow Exterior Pack, a Nickel Atlas Exterior Pack, a black contrast roof, and more. One unique thing we like about the exterior is the split rear liftgate.

The new Range Rover SV is distinguished visually by a unique front bumper and a 5-bar grille, plus SV badges on the side gills and a white ceramic SV roundel badge on the tailgate. You can also order the SV with optional 23-inch alloy wheels.

The Range Rover is smaller than the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade. The long-wheelbase Range Rover is about the same size as the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. The short-wheelbase Range Rover is sized like a midsize luxury SUV like the Audi Q7.

Standard Features

Where to begin? Even the base SE trim of the Range Rover is very well-appointed owing to its status as a flagship luxury SUV. Standard features include all-wheel steering, a panoramic moonroof, LED headlights, three-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, Windsor leather seats, and much more.

The standard powertrain is a 3.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-6 engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive.

The standard infotainment system in the Range Rover is a Pivi Pro 13.1-inch screen with Amazon Alexa, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and Meridian premium audio.

With the 2023 Range Rover SV, you can choose a standard or long-wheelbase chassis, and also a new 5-seat LWB configuration. The SV comes standard with the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, which puts out 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, which is 37 lb-ft more torque than last year’s supercharged 5.0-liter V8.

Factory Options

A twin-turbo V8 engine is optional on the base SE trim and standard on many other 2023 Range Rovers. Other options include a long-wheelbase chassis with an optional third row of seats and a 4-seat option with a premium rear center console.

Upgrading to the Autobiography trim adds many high-end luxury features to the Range Rover. These include illuminated aluminum treadplates, a front center console refrigerator compartment, an auto-folding cargo space cover, 4-zone climate control, 24-way heated, cooled, and hot stone massage front seats, executive-class comfort rear seats, semi-aniline leather seats, a head-up display, and a rear entertainment system.

The First Edition is equipped similarly to the Autobiography model but adds Tailgate Event Suite seating in the cargo area, First Edition treadplates, unique wheels, and First Edition script in the Ecru Walnut inlays.

On the new Range Rover SV, 23-inch wheels are available.

Anybody who plans to use their 2023 Range Rover in off-road situations should consider the Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack, a $5,250 package that includes an electronic active differential with torque vectoring (via braking), electronic air suspension, and configurable driving programs.

You can also order the new Range Rover with a $2,000 Technology Pack that includes a video rearview mirror, a head-up display, and an interior power plug.

Individual options include fixed side steps ($1,600), a heated windshield ($350), and even a Tailgate Event Suite, a $1,950 package that converts the cargo area of the Range Rover into a rear-facing seat for two tailgaters, replete with leather cushions.

Engine & Transmission

There are three engine options in the Range Rover.

The base engine in the SE trim is a 3.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged mild-hybrid inline-6.

The Autobiography, First Edition, and SV trims come standard with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, which is optional in the SE trim.

The Range Rover PHEV uses the 3.0-liter inline-6 as the basis for its hybrid powertrain. Land Rover says it has 50kW DC rapid charging capability, which means it can reach an 80% charge in less than an hour.No EPA fuel economy figures have been posted for the Range Rover PHEV, but Range Rover expects it to have an all-electric range of 48 miles.
