Used to activate new installations of Microsoft's OS, the Windows product key is something you probably don't think about . . . until you really need it. Whether you're about to do a clean install of Windows 11 or 10 on your existing PC or you need to move the license to a new computer, you'll probably need this 25-character, alphanumeric code. Show
As we've noted elsewhere, the best way to get Windows 10 or 11 for free is to reuse a Windows product key you have either on the current computer or another you own and aren't using anymore (note that "OEM" keys may not let you reuse them on different hardware). But unless you bought a copy of the OS at retail and have it written down somewhere handy, you may not know the code. Fortunately, there are several ways to find your Windows 10 or 11 product key and they're all easy. Method 1: Use Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder to Find Windows 10 / 11 Product KeysOne of the easiest -- and my favorite -- way to find a Windows 10 or 11 product key is by using a free utility called Magical JellyBean KeyFinder. The company behind it makes a paid version that will also give you product keys from your system for tools such as Microsoft Office or Photoshop Elements. However, the base version which grabs your Windows product key is a totally free download. Here's how to use it. 1. Download Magical JellyBean KeyFinder, the free version. 2. Extract keyfinder.exe from the zip file to a folder on your PC. You can skip the other files in the zip archive. 3. Launch keyfinder.exe. 4. Click Yes if prompted by user account control. (Image credit: Tom's Hardware)You will a see a list of information about your current install of Windows. 5. Copy the code after "CD Key." That's your Windows 10 or 11 product key. It's not the number after "Product ID." (Image credit: Tom's Hardware)You will also notice there that Magical Jelly Bean describes your installation as either "Installed from 'Full Packaged Product' media" or "Installed from 'OEM' media." If your key is marked as coming from OEM media, it may not work if you try to use it to install Windows on a different PC. Method 2: Use the Command Prompt to Find Windows 10 / 11 Product KeysYou should be able to find your Windows 10 or 11 product key by entering a particular command at the command line. However, in my testing, I found on one PC that this method returned a blank key while the Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder found the same machine's key. To get your Windows product key from the command prompt: 1. Launch the command prompt. The easiest way to get there is to hit Windows + R to open the run dialog box, then type in cmd and hit Enter. You should see the key on screen below the line that says "OA3XOriginalProductKey." If not, this method didn't work but you can try another one. You just have to know where to look. 1. Open the registry editor. The easiest way is to get there is to hit Windows key + R to open the run dialog box, enter "regedit" and hit Enter. All HP computers and tablets shipped with Windows 10 will activate automatically when connected to the internet. If you install a different version of Windows 10, the system might need to reactivate Windows. There might also be situations when Windows requires reactivation even though the product has already been activated. The edition of Windows 10 can be changed by inputting a new Product Key, for example, going from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro. The Product Key could be obtained by buying a retail kit from a store or online. When the new Product Key is entered, the system will reactivate using that new Product Key. Windows activation termsThe following list explains the terms that are used during the activation process:
Activating Windows 10Windows 10 can only be activated by connecting to the internet (except for volume-license versions of Windows 10). Windows 10 cannot be activated over the phone. If a system has a Digital Product Key that was injected into the system BIOS during the manufacturing process, Windows 10 will use that key to activate Windows 10 on that specific system. Activation is automatic when connected to the internet. All HP systems sold with Windows 10 will include a Digital Product Key in the BIOS. If the system does not have a DPK in the BIOS, a Product Key can be manually entered and Windows 10 will use that Product Key to activate. Activation is automatic when connected to the internet if the user has already typed in the Product Key. Digital Product Keys and retail Product Keys are unique and can only be used to activate one system. If the system cannot be connected to the internet and activated, the system is in the 'Deferred Activation' state. Windows 10 can be used normally while in 'Deferred Activation'. No message is displayed on the desktop indicating that Windows is not activated. A system with a valid DPK or Product Key will activate automatically when connected to the internet. On rare occasions, it is possible to connect a system with a valid DPK to the internet, but not activate Windows. By connecting to the internet, Windows will be taken out of 'Deferred Activation' and will expect to be activated. The system will display a light grey message in the lower right corner of the desktop stating that Windows is not activated. Also, various personalization features are turned off, for example, the user cannot change the desktop background. The easiest fix is connecting the system to the internet, ensuring it has access to Microsoft, and allowing the system time to activate. If the system does not have a valid DPK or Product Key, Windows 10 cannot be activated on the system. Valid Product Key Connected to internet Activation Yes Yes Automatic Yes No Deferred Activation Not activated, but fully functional Yes Yes, but not activated Not activated Not activated and message on desktop Personalization features are blocked. No Yes Not activated Not activated and message on desktop Personalization features are blocked. No No Deferred Activation Not activated, but fully functional Entering a Windows 10 Product KeySystems purchased without Windows 10, or the Windows 10 downgrade to Windows 7, will not contain a Digital Product Key. Windows 10 can be installed on the system without a Product Key, but the system cannot be activated without a DPK or Product Key. Windows 10 will display a light grey message in the lower right corner of the desktop stating that Windows is not activated. A valid Windows 10 license must be purchased which will include a 25-character Product Key. The Product Key can be manually entered during installation of the OS or after Windows 10 is installed.
Reasons Windows 10 might need to be activated againIf your computer came with Windows 10, the following conditions might cause Windows to require activation through Microsoft:
Activating Windows after reinstalling Windows 10Occasionally you might need to reinstall Windows 10. If the system has a Digital Product Key, the fresh copy of Windows 10 will activate automatically when connected to the internet. If the system was activated using a 25-character Product Key manually typed into the system, you will be required to type the Product Key into the system again. Confirming that Windows was activatedVerify that Windows activation was successful.
