She recently revealed that she's penniless after spending the $250,000 prize money she won as 2003's winner of Big Brother Australia.

But Regina 'Reggie' Bird, who last month joked on Facebook that her financial situation was so dire that she was planning to relocate to an $18 a night caravan park, has hit back at claims that she's been 'irresponsible' with her winnings.

The 40-year-old reality TV star has spoken out in Woman's Day magazine revealing it was two divorces, a conman, medical bills and unemployment that have financially crippled her - not frivolous spending.

The beloved TV personality who suffers from retinal pigmentation, which means she has lost much of her vision, says things went badly for when she left her first husband Adrian and she forked out $20,000 on her divorce.

A series of bad financial decisions then saw her lose money on a contract with celebrity manager Harry M. Miller, as well as $40,000 on a con man who promised her a TV career and, finally, it was her second divorce to Dale Sorensen in 2012 that pretty much up ended the bubbly beauty leaving her broke.

Unable to find employment for two years after starring on the high profile show, the star who once dreamed of being a flight attendant resigned from her job with Virgin Blue because she said her celebrity status interfered with her ability to work.

Her Twitter profile shows her desperation to find work: 'Winner of BB03, mum to Mia and Lucas, Im going blind with RP, Spend my time looking after lucas he has Cystic Fibrosis. I need a JOB!!!!'

'I'm on a disability pension because of my eyes. I live from fortnight to fortnight,' says the Gold Coast-based star in the interview.

'If I had my time again, of course, things would be very different. I'm older, wiser and not as trusting anymore,' said the down-to-earth lady referring to the money she won on the hit TV show.

Revealed: The 40-year-old claimed her recent Facebook comment about relocating to live in an $18 a week caravan park was a 'joke' 

The mother to Mia, 6, and Lucas, 4, is currently using social media to raise funds to be able to buy a cystic fibrosis vest for her son who suffers from the medical condition and has previously spoken out about the challenges of juggling work and caring for her children.

She recently posted: 'Being a single mum is tough.

'Even tougher when you are vision impaired and have a child with cystic fibrosis!

'Things are only going to get tougher once the governments new policies come in and also now having to pay for scripts for Lucas' medication.'

But even with her personal challenges the upbeat star is still getting behind Cystic Fibrosis charities and recently drummed up support for 65 Roses Day.

'Help find a cure,' Reggie implored her Twitter followers.

'This is a heartbreaking disease that Lucas has to live with and struggle to breathe each day.'

She's even been filming short films with her son Lucas to raise awareness for the heartbreaking disease.

Reggie won Big Brother Australia's third season in 2003 and walked away with the $250,000 prize money.

Health. In 2008 she underwent emergency surgery arising from an ectopic pregnancy and was also declared legally blind after having been diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition, retinitis pigmentosa, a rare hereditary eye disease that may lead to blindness. She had lost 90% of her central vision.

Reggie was developing a cataract. If left untreated, this would grow and he'd eventually go blind in that eye.
