Can you lose a bought car in GTA 5 story mode?

If you can’t find your car in GTA 5 story mode, then there are a few ways to find it – watch the video above to find out how:

  • If it’s a lead character’s (Trevor, Michael, Franklin) own vehicle, then it will be returned to that character’s safehouse, e.g. Trevor’s pickup truck will be at his safehouse on the south of the Alamo Sea (the big lake in the north).
  • If it’s one you’ve bought or modified at the garage, then your best hope is the Impound Garage
  • If you’ve abandoned your vehicle to start a mission, been wasted or arrested or simply wandered off, then you can almost always find it at the Impound Garage. An icon will appear on the map for the Impound Garage when a car is available there. You have to pay $250 to get it back. The location of the Impound Garage is in the video above
  • Unlike GTA 5 Online, you can’t insure your vehicle in story mode, so if it’s been destroyed, then you’ve lost it. The only way to get it back is by restoring a save point which means you’ll lose your progress to that point

Can you lose a bought car in GTA 5 story mode?

When they're just going to disappear and be replaced with the character's shitty default car (mainly talking about Michael.. the others are decent) at the start of a mission? It's INFURIATING that I can't change the default car.

It would be awesome if someone made a mod to fix the shitty car/garage system.

Buy a garage, keep your cars there, treat them like they're real cars (i.e. don't abandon them on the side of the road).

And buy Los Santos Customs as Franklin as soon as you can, you get free upgrades at that location once you own it.

But yeah, don't buy cars in SP, it's a waste of cash. Just steal them and upgrade them for free.

That's why I said "shitty garage system" as well. I've had the game since it came out on PC (put in 37 hours so far) so I've done everything you've said already. Starting a mission according to the game is abandoning the car so half the time it'll be gone forever. Won't be at the impound nor the garage. So essentially a waste of 230,000+ dollars (upgrades+garage).

I bought this game to play the missions so even stealing cars and upgrading them are a complete waste of time because of how the character's main car pops up instead of the most recent car I've been in. Most of the time I'm just driving to missions. The way they've made it, it's a waste to drive all the way to a garage or impound to collect my car just to have it disappear once I reach the mission.

Even when you have a garage it doesn't guarantee you that your cars won't disappear. If you take one of your cars to a mission / job that requires you to take another vehicle once you get there, the vehicle you take there disappears. Sometimes it will be in the impound, but not all the time. It's the one thing I hate about story mode.

Would be nice if Rockstar added Mors Mutual Insurance and purchasable 2,6 and 10 car garages to single player.

level 1

I got a maxed out comet and accidentally drove into a mission marker. gone forever,

level 2

you can get your cars back from the car impound

level 1

Only vehicle I upgraded in SP was Franklins motorcycle, I find Motorcycles are the best vehicle in the game and I play Franklin way more than the other two.

level 2

For me driving a motorcycle means insta-dead.

level 1

It's for weirdos like me who like to RP and not steal cars.

level 2

except they make it so there is basically no difference between stealing and buying a car, which is fucking stupid. I dumped $600k on a car, didn't get a scratch on it but switched characters for a second, and the car is gone for good now; not in any garage or impound.

I mean, what is the difference between a purchased and a stolen car, it's stupid

level 2

Not stealing cars in Grand Theft Auto just doesn't seem right.

level 1

One good thing is, when you buy a car and place it in the garage, it is available in director mode as a quick-spawn. Outside of that though, the system has been poorly implemented. Wish the garage you own would let you spawn stored cars, like with the special cars through the garage menu, instead of being a one-off thing.

can you upgrade the default cars?

Yeah, still disappointed that Rockstar fucked up this bad with the car-in-mission system.

level 1

yeah, I just learned this stupid fucking lesson the hard way. $600k worth of car/upgrades just to have the thing completely disappear on me when I switch characters. this was a huge problem with the console version and there are mountains of complains about it; you'd think they would have fucking fixed this by now.

level 1

If you do create a car you really like and really like to play with just create a quick save while sitting in it. Also your cars that are in your garages in S.P. are available to you in director mode. Also you can always upgrade their personal vehicles because those are guaranteed to not go missing.

Do bought cars disappear in GTA 5 story mode?

It will no longer appear in your garage. It will be gone for good. All that money you spent on modding will have been wasted. You'll need to repurchase/steal the car again and re mod it.

Where do my purchased cars go in GTA 5 story mode?

The cars are spawned at your big garage (colorful garage icon on map) for every character. One should note that these cars are spawned only once so make sure you bring them back in one piece. Show activity on this post. The cars are sent to your garage within 24 hours of in game time.

How do I get my purchased car back in GTA 5?

If you own a garage, then any vehicles you purchased will automatically have insurance and a tracker. These safeguards ensure that if your vehicle was destroyed, you can just call Mors Mutual Insurance and pay the restoration fee. (And if someone else destroyed your car, they will automatically pay the fee.)
