Penn delivers the challenge of an Ivy League curriculum to academically talented high school students seeking a pre-collegiate experience. Students engage with leading faculty and build intellectual connections within accelerated two-, three-, or six-week Penn Summer High School Programs.

Penn SAS High School Programs has partnered with Summer Discovery for over 10 years. Summer Discovery oversees all community-building aspects of the summer programming, including student supervision, student activities, and ensuring the health and safety of all students throughout while participating in Penn’s programs. The University of Pennsylvania manages all academic programming, including the application process, advising, and course enrollment.

If you are a Philadelphia resident and attend a School District of Philadelphia public or charter high school, you may be eligible to attend Penn Summer Prep or a Penn Summer Academy free of charge with a Penn Summer Scholarship.

Information about summer 2023 programs will begin to be released in late September 2022.

Summer Coding Camps with iD Tech

We all know the flow of a student’s summer vacation: it begins with the sweet bliss of sleeping late, but too often descends into boredom and inactivity. Luckily, there are many summer programs out there that can be both fun and educational.

We have compiled a list of just a few of the summer opportunities for your child, complete with program descriptions, ages served, dates offered, location, and cost.

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Summer Camps

What: Philadelphia Parks and Recreation offers over 100 summer day camps in neighborhoods across the city where children will experience arts and crafts, sports, educational activities, field trips, and games. Specialty camps focus on one particular activity or skill throughout the summer like visual and performing arts, swimming, rowing and many more.

Who: Most camps range from ages 7-13, with specialty camps for kids and teenagers up to 18

When: six-week sessions July 5 -August 12, 2022. Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Cost: Prices vary. Some camps are priced on a week-to-week basis ranging from $25-125 per week. Other camps are priced by season, ranging from $25-750 per season.

Academy Science Camp

What: Academy Explorers Camp invites campers, ages 6-10, to learn about natural science in a safe, fun, and engaging way. Each week of camp explores an exciting new theme and will feature hands-on activities, creative crafts and untold secrets of the museum! From fossils to our extreme earth to amazing animals, check out our camp themes to find the best fit for your child’s interests.

Penn Museum Anthropology Camp

What: A camp that allows students to learn through exploration of Penn’s world-renowned collections. Students get to act as archaeologists, historians, and museum designers.

Who: Children ages 6-13

When: Weekly sessions starting June 27-August 19, 2022, 9am-3pm

Allens Lane Art Center Summer Art Camp

What: Our Summer Art Camp offers a unique blend of arts and athletic activities that gives each child a fun and memorable summer experience. Our in-person campers will still get top level instruction in a wide variety of artistic disciplines like Dance, Theater, Singing, Crafts, Art and Ceramics plus plenty of Outdoor Games and Activities while our virtual campers will get more specific instruction in the performing or visual arts from well qualified teaching artists who know how to bring out the fun and creativity in your child.

When: Physical camp dates – June 20th-August 12th – 8:30am-3:30pm, with before-care from 7:30am-8:30am and after-care from 3:30pm-6:00pm for an additional fee, only available for those enrolled in the 4 or 8 week sessions.

Asian Arts Initiative: Bruce Lee Camp

What: Asian Arts Initiative’s Camp Bruce Lee Pilot Program is a week-long program for middle schoolers that teaches confidence and self-knowledge in a mind, body, spirit curriculum based on Bruce Lee’s philosophies and life.

Who: Children ages 10-14

Butcher Sew Shop Junior Camp

What: “Mighty Makers” delve head first into the world of machine stitching and never look back. Session themes include making Design Your Own Stuffie, Fashion Designer, Bedroom Makeover, Slumber Party and much more!

When: One week sessions starting June 27 and ending September 2. Camps run from 9am-3pm, with extended care available from 8am-9am and/or 3-5pm, each for additional fee.

Camp Ladore, The Salvation Army

What: Camp Ladore is owned and operated by The Salvation Army. Situated among picturesque mountain ranges it consists of approximately 1,200 acres of land surrounding a 365 acre lake. Our programs take full advantage of these natural resources for contributing to the spiritual, educational, social, and recreational needs of every camper. Camp Ladore is ready to provide the ultimate camping experience with a mature well-trained staff and accreditation through the American Camp Association.

Camp Settlement

What: “The Mission of The College Settlement and Kuhn Day Camps is to provide camping programs and services to young people from the greater Philadelphia area, especially those who are economically disadvantaged, in order to foster personal growth through understanding, acceptance, respect for self, others and our natural world by means of enjoyable, experiential and environmental educational activities… We will post two (2) daily videos which will vary in length, covering topics such as gardening, camp songs, arts and crafts, healthy nutrition, guest videos by our international counselors, and more. On Fridays, we’ll provide a zoom link and ask those who can and want to join in our campfire chats. We also plan a Talent Show where you can send in your talent videos and we will make one Talent Show video. Those who sign up will receive a packet of activities that will coincide with some of the videos. We miss you—and hope you will join in the fun from home!”

Camp Sojourner Girls Leadership Camp

What: “The mission of Girls Leadership Camp is to help girls become leaders who take charge of their own lives and also act as agents of positive change in their communities. We fundraise all year and collect supply donations so that we can offer our program to girls no matter what their family economic situation may be. We accomplish our work by hosting 8-17 year old girls at Camp Sojourner, our summer overnight camp program, and by involving girls in our year-round mentoring, service projects, creative arts, and leadership activities.”

Legacy Tennis Summer Camps

What: “The Community Tennis Summer Camp program provides seven weeks of top-notch tennis instruction, team and individual match play competition, life skills and mentor-ship, reading and reflective writing activities, a city-wide team and individual tennis tournament, a free Team Legacy t-shirt and the opportunity to compete in the USTA’s essay contest.”

DiverseCITY Online

What: “DiverseCity Online is a virtual leadership and sports training platform for youth. Our live-streamed and pre-recorded sessions offer instruction for multiple sports from experienced athletes and coaches. We strive to keep young people active, healthy, and connected to a global community!”

This program offers 12+ hours of training per week, plus a library of pre-recorded content produced by expert-level coaches and instructors. Sports such as baseball, basketball, dance, football, soccer, and more are showcased in instruction. Live sessions will last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the sport, and will be recorded for view at a later time.

InMovement Gymnastics Education Enrichment Camp

What: “Exposure to an array of physical activities including gymnastics, rock climbing, slack lining, dance, obstacle courses, yoga, group games and more. Hard work and supporting one another are emphasized through team challenges and goal setting. There are weekly fun and engaging themes including American Ninja Warrior, Super Hero, Under the Big Top, Jedi Training and more!”

Fleisher’s Children & Youth Programs

What: “Fleisher Art Memorial’s summer workshops for children and youth offer young artists a chance to explore their creativity five days per week. Fleisher offers morning and afternoon workshops with an option to stay for lunch for a small fee per week. Workshops offer everything from painting and mosaics to cartooning and terrarium construction.”

GSK Science in the Summer: In Partnership with the Franklin Institute

What: This year’s GSK Science in the Summer theme is Be a Biologist! with all-new activities that invite children to play the role of professional biologists and tackle real-world challenges in fisheries, plant biology, paleobiology, and wildlife biology.

The program will be offered in-person at libraries across the greater Philadelphia area for children entering 2nd through 6th grade. The program team and library staff are working together to ensure we can deliver a safe and memorable summer science program.

Interested families may enter an online lottery now through June 3 for a chance to participate at the library of their choice. Summer calendars are available for each participating county below.

If you are not selected in the lottery, the educator guide, materials lists, and videos will be shared online, so you can still assemble your own materials and have fun being biologists at home!

Introduction to the Performing Arts Camp, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation

What: “Children will have the opportunity to take classes in movement, drama, & music. The campers will also perform in a presentation at the end of the six-week camp. This unique experience gives youngsters the chance to perform in a professional space. Campers will also take performing arts related field trips.”

Lavner Camps is filled with experiential, hands-on learning, collaboration, excitement, and cutting-edge topics in STEM, Technology & The Arts. Our proprietary curricula is student-centered, so whether you are a novice who can’t wait to learn a new program or an advanced camper with years of experience, you will acquire new skills each week. With a guaranteed max staff to camper ratio of 1:4 to 1:8, we offer the premier summer camp experience for ages 6 to 16.

Parent Infant Center Summer Camp

What: “PIC’s urban campus provides easy access to all that the Greater Philadelphia area has to offer children during the summer. Camp is divided into five sessions, each with a focus on different theme-related activities. In addition to themed sessions, campers enjoy water play, play at neighborhood parks, visit the museums and cultural institutions that surround us, take trips to the nearby lakes, movies, play games, and see shows by visiting musicians and other performing artists.”

What: “This camp will focus on teaching all aspects of the game. We will provide an organized and structured camp on preparing the younger player for his next level and refining his game. Philadelphia NFL Alumni Hero Youth Football Camps
What: Led by professional coaches with supplemental instruction from NFL Alumni Philadelphia Eagles like Fred Barnett, Garry Cobb, Irving Fryar, Frank LeMaster and Brandon Whiting. Boys and girls ages 6-14 learn to run, throw, catch and play within safe, non-contact or flag instruction. On the field, we provide station-based training for athletic and football skill development. We establish small space games, skill challenges and team tournament competition. Kids get the opportunity to build confidence, knowledge and have fun. Off the field, kids are engaged with programs like Eat Like a Pro ©, The Franchise, Chief Scout Draft and Rapid Fire True or False.

What: Rock to the Future summer programs help students to learn, grow, and rock. Music education is a critical part of growing up, and our programs help students build the skills they need to succeed on and off stage.

Rowing Camp, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation
What: Have you ever dreamed of rowing on the river? Are you interested in learning how to row? This is a great opportunity for local teenagers to do just that. Three 2-week sessions are offered.

Campers will be taught the basics of the sport. This theme camp is held at Lloyd Hall on historic Boathouse Row. Breakfast and a snack will be provided. Campers must bring their own lunch.

Limited space available per session. Registration is taken on a first come basis.

Sing Summer Camp
What: “SING Philadelphia is a week-long summer choir camp for boys and girls ages 7-12. The camp provides an exceptional musical experience for children and youth who love to sing. Under instruction of Director Dr. Darryl Roland, campers learn classical repertoire with special attention to breathing techniques, vowel formation and choral tone, sight singing and intonation, and music theory (written notation).”

Who: Premier Camp Experience – Children ages 6-17; Community Style Camp – Children ages 5-12 (13 if with a sibling)

Where: Pocono Environmental Education Center. Pick-up and drop-off is in Northeast Philadelphia.

Cost: Price depends on family’s monthly income. “If you are able to invest more than your given rate ($100 deposit), we ask you to please give generously to allow us to continue to offer camp at a subsidized rate and bring more campers to camp.”

WorkReady Philadelphia

Who: youth and young adults ages 12-24, who are Philadelphia residents and who have not enrolled in post-secondary education
When: summer programs last six weeks
Where: varying work locations across Philadelphia
Cost: Participants in WorkReady Summer programs can earn up to ~$1,000* depending on the program. There are two types of programs offered in the summer:

Incentive-based programs are targeted towards young people with little to no previous work experience and are open to 12-24 year-olds. These programs offer opportunities to learn about careers and career pathways, set short-term goals, and provide the opportunity to work on individual or group projects. These programs pay up to $1,000 based on the number of projects and milestones completed during the program.

Wage-based programs are targeted towards young people with previous work or leadership experience and are open to 14-24 year-olds. These programs offer opportunities for career exploration and preparation and engage participants in hourly work-based experiences. Young people earn $11 per hour in wage-based programs and usually work about 20 hours per week.
