If you like Round-Up, you’ll love Ortho GroundClear Concentrate, because it combines the main ingredient in Round-Up – glyphosate – with a much smaller concentration of an equally deadly herbicide, imazapyr. Both herbicides are non-selective, which means they will kill anything with which they come in contact, so it’s important to use GroundClear properly. Show
Glyphosate is a post-emergent herbicide and must be absorbed through the leaves, while imazapyr is both pre- and post-emergent and can be absorbed both through the leaves and the roots. Both bind to the soil and can potentially enter the groundwater, but if you use GroundClear according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, there’s little chance of environmental consequences, although the area you spray won’t support plant growth for at least a year. That’s a good thing when it comes to weed control but not so good for your garden. Where to Use GroundClear and Where Not to Use ItGroundClear is intended to kill weeds that grow in unwanted places, such as: under decks; along curbs and fence lines; in rock gardens and graveled areas; and along roads and walkways. It is not intended for use as a weed killer for your garden and should not be used where desirable plants are growing. Moreover, it should never be used where pets or people could come into contact with it or be affected by the spray. The herbicides in GroundClear can be carried by rain runoff, so you should never use this product on a slope, nor should you use it on a fence line if desirable vegetation is growing on the other side of the fence. Do not spray it on your lawn, near fruit, vegetables or any other consumable growth or over tree roots. When and How Often to Use GroundClearBecause it contains glyphosate, which interferes with the growth process, GroundClear works best on actively growing vegetation, and the best time to apply it is in early spring, when growth is most vigorous. This is not the ideal product to use as a weed preventative, but if you do use it on areas in which no growth is visible, the second ingredient, imazapyr, will enter the soil and prevent growth for up to a year. In areas of heavy rainfall, you may need to apply GroundClear more often than every year. In such areas, the manufacturer recommends spraying it every six to eight months. In arid regions without much rainfall, a yearly application should be sufficient to keep weeds under control. How to Mix and Use GroundClear GroundClear is a concentrate, so you have to mix it with water in the proportion of 24 fluid ounces per gallon of water, which is about a 20 percent mixture. If you want to fill a 20-oz. spray bottle, you need 4 ounces of GroundClear, and since it comes in 32-oz. containers, one container is enough to fill your spray bottle eight times. If you have a large area to spray, you’ll probably want to buy GroundClear in a 1- or 2-gallon container, which is enough to make 5 to 10 gallons of mixture. Spray GroundClear in full sun on a windless day, taking care to control the overspray. Remember that the spray will kill any vegetation with which it comes in contact. Be Environmentally SafeTo apply GroundClear, choose a dry day with no rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours. If you use it just before a rain, runoff may carry it into drainage ditches, and it could potentially end up in the groundwater. For the same reason, avoid watering the area that you spray for at least 24 hours. Always keep the sprayer pointed downward while it’s discharging to avoid inhaling any of the product or having it become airborne.
