What type of gas does a Lexus use?
I just bought a (non-hybrid) Lexus. I don’t want to fill it up with the wrong gas and hurt my engine. What type of gas does a Lexus use?
Good question! Using the recommended type of gas is important for your engine’s health. There is a range of recommended gas types, depending on the type of Lexus you have.
For sedans:
- An ES (regular or hybrid), uses 87 octane (regular fuel).
- An IS, GS, or LS, uses 91 octane (premium fuel).
For SUVs:
- A UX (regular or hybrid), RX, and NX Hybrid all take 87 octane (regular fuel)
- An NX, RX hybrid, GX, and LX, it’s recommended you use 91 octane (premium fuel).

This question comes up quite a bit, especially lately with recent fuel shortages. Lexus recommends using Unleaded Fuel in every model, but the minimum octane rating does vary by model and, for some Lexus models, by the year. Below is a list of all current models that need only the regular unleaded, 87 octane fuel and a list of the Lexus models with a premium unleaded, 91 octane fuel requirement. IF you’re driving a model with a 91 octane requirement but cannot find a station with premium unleaded fuel, do not panic. You can use a lower rating (just as long as it is unleaded) and your car will survive – go ahead and fuel up so you can get where you need to go then continue to use the required, higher octane the next time you need gas, or as soon as your favorite station has it available for you.
Regular Unleaded Fuel Requirement – 87 Octane
Lexus CT 200h – all model years (2011 – 2017)
Lexus ES 300h – all model years (2013 or newer)
Lexus ES 350 – 2012 or newer model years
Lexus NX 300h – all model years (2015 or newer)
Lexus RX 350 – 2012 or newer model years
Lexus HS 250h – all model years (2011-2012)
Premium Unleaded Fuel Requirement – 91 Octane
TIP: If you drive a Turbo or any Lexus model with an “F” at the end of it- then go ahead and use the highest fuel grade available – keep those twin turbos spinning & maintain optimal performance.
Lexus GS 200t – all model years (2016 or newer)
Lexus GS 350 – all model years
Lexus GS F – all model years
Lexus GX 460 – all model years
Lexus IS 200t – all model years (2016 or newer)
Lexus IS 250 & IS 250c – all model years
Lexus IS 300 – all model years (2016 or newer)
Lexus IS 350 & IS 350c – all model years
Lexus IS F – all model years
Lexus LS 460 – all model years
Lexus LS 600h – all model years
Lexus LX 570 – all model years
Lexus NX 200t – all model years
- Lexus NX 300 (2018 or newer – although it has a new name, it’s still a twin turbo engine)
Lexus RC 200t – all model years (2016-2017)
Lexus RC 300 – all model years (2016 or newer)
Lexus RC 350 – all model years
Lexus RC F – all model years
Lexus RX 450h – all model years
** Lexus RX 350 – 2011 Models or older
Lexus LC – all model years
Basically, if you drive a GS, IS, RC coupe, LS, GX or LX – always use the higher octane fuel so you can get the performance and fuel economy these models should give you.
