Pre-operative Surgical & Shower Instructions

Prepare for your upcoming surgery with these simple steps:

  • Before Surgery, you can play an important role in reducing your risk of infection at the surgical site by decreasing the number of germs on your skin.
  • Prior to your surgery, you should plan on showering or take a bath the night before surgery and the morning of surgery. You should use an antibacterial soap (i.e. Dial) to scrub the area where surgery will be performed. This is intended to limit the growth of germs which may be present on your skin.
  • In addition, the hair on your chest, legs, and abdomen may be clipped by a surgical team in order to help make your skin as free as germs as possible. This is intended to limit the growth of germs which may be present on your skin.
  • If you become ill before your surgery, please notify your physician immediately. They may want to make sure that you are well enough and may want to perform additional tests.

Follow these simple guidelines the EVENING BEFORE SURGERY:

  • Shower the night before surgery with an antibacterial soap (i.e. Dial) or with an antibacterial solution (i.e. Hibiclens) that can be purchased at your local pharmacy.
  • Special cleaning attention should be given to the axilla (arm pits), under the breasts or folds in the skin, and the groin area.
  • During your shower, you should scrub your skin in the area where your surgery will be. You should scrub the area for approximately three (3) minutes.
  • Please remember to wear clean clothing / pajamas after your shower.
  • Also remember to change your bed linens the night before your surgery as well.
  • Do not sleep with your pets after you have performed your pre-surgical shower.

Follow these simple guidelines the MORNING BEFORE SURGERY:

  • The morning of your surgery, you should also take another shower.
  • Remember to shower early enough that your hair should be dry before your scheduled surgery time.
  • Please also avoid using body emollients, oils, creams, deodorant, make-up, and lotions after washing and using your skin prep. Some products may decrease the effects of your antibacterial soap and shower. By following these simple steps we can help reduce your surgical infection risks. If you should have any other questions regarding your pre-surgical needs, please contact your physician.
