Autumn Leaves - Presentation

Autumn Leaves is a very popular song and jazz standard composed by musician Joseph Kosma in 1945. The title is based on the original lyrics written by the French poet Jacques Prévert. Kosma and Prévert collaborated on the song Autumn Leaves (or in its French title “Les feuilles mortes”) for the film Les Portes de la Nuit, released in 1946. It was not until 1980 that the song was officially published, in the book “Soleil de Nuit”. The music became a hit both in jazz circles and with the general public. Lyrics Autumn Leaves Nat king Cole

Autumn Leaves

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Autumn Leaves’” is a popular song. Originally it was a 1945 French song, “fr:Les feuilles mortes” (literally “The Dead Leaves”), with music by Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert. The Hungarian title is “Hulló levelek” (Falling Leaves). Yves Montand (with Irène Joachim) introduced “Les feuilles mortes” in the film Les Portes de la nuit (1946).

The song is in AABC form. “Autumn Leaves” offers a popular way for beginning jazz musicians to become acquainted with jazz harmony as the chord progression consists almost solely of ii-V-I and ii-V sequences which are typical of jazz. It was originally, and is most commonly, performed in the key of G minor, but is also played in E minor and other keys. Eva Cassidy’s version (clip on the right) is played in B-flat minor.

Its iim7 – V7 – IMaj7 – IVMaj7 – ii7(b5) – V7 – im chord progression is an example of the circle-of-fifths progression.
