Your Halloween Seasonal TV Preview (abridged) with Schedules

  • 22 September 2012
  • by Jimmy Terror
  • The Liberal Dead

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.

We won’t touch on everything and I’m sure new programming will come up as October gets itself moving. I’ll throw an update out there from time to time if a special is airing or a new programming line up is discovered, uncovered, revealed or undead. Yes, this is for cable or dish. Network TV will

The HeyUGuys UK DVD/Blu-Ray Release Round-Up – 11th June

  • 11 June 2012
  • by Kenji Lloyd
  • HeyUGuys

Last week brought Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut to the shelves in Coriolanus, in which he starred as the eponymous lead alongside Gerard Butler, as well as the likes of Michael Dowse’s Goon, and Madonna’s W.E.

This week has, as ever, a fantastic new selection of films and TV programmes available for purchase from today, including three of my all-time favourite TV programmes. On top of that, there’s an Oscar winner, an Oscar nominee, and one film that everyone was talking about in the run-up to the awards season but was noticeably absent when the Academy Award nominees were announced in January.

My personal picks of the week:

With so much choice, I was forced to divide into two categories of film and TV this week:

James Bobbins’ The Muppets & Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar

Entourage Season 8, Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 & One Tree Hill Season 9

The Muppets Iframe

'Piranha 3Dd' Movie Review (2012)

  • 04 June 2012
  • by Brad Brevet
  • Rope Of Silicon

There is only one way to "enjoy" Piranha 3Dd and that is drunk and with as many friends as possible, most of you hardly paying attention to what is going on in the film. I haven't seen director John Gulager's Project Greenlight venture Feast, which spawned a pair of sequels after becoming a buzzed about horror film back in 2005, but if this film is any indication of its quality I hope I never do. This is, without a doubt, one of the worst movies I have seen in the last several years. For screenwriters Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan and Joel Soisson to leave their names attached as "writers" is an insult to the word. Prior to Piranha 3Dd, Melton and Dunstan were responsible for writing several of the Saw sequels and Soisson can lay claim to the likes of Mimic 2, The Prophecy: Forsaken and Children of the Corn: Genesis among others.

Mimic 3-Film Collection | Review

  • 14 May 2012
  • by Lex Walker
  • JustPressPlay

Keeping company with such 90s creature features as Species and The Relic, Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic seems like a creepy thriller masterpiece by comparison, even if it has just as many plotholes and lop-sided characterizations as its contemporaries. What sets Mimic apart from similar flicks is the monster effects work del Toro that has since made him a revered creator of fantastical horror, and that’s enough to make the first film of this sci-fi horror trilogy worth at least a single view. With Mimic 2 and Mimic: Sentinel (aka Mimic 3)—crammed onto the same Blu-ray disc—there’s no such allure; you don’t have a visual effects auteur at the helm of either, and both the writing and acting are painfully corny. The Mimic franchise was better left as a standalone film.

'Haywire', 'Joyful Noise', 'W.E.' and 'New Year's Eve' Lead This Week's New DVD and Blu-ray Releases

  • 01 May 2012
  • by Brad Brevet
  • Rope Of Silicon

Haywire From an entertainment perspective this is the week's best new release, but for action junkies this might not be the film you are necessarily expecting. Haywire certainly has its moments, but it's not the Bourne-style film the trailers were selling. It doesn't present it's action set pieces with quick editing and "thwacks' and "pows". It's more awkward and realistic than that with heavy thuds and what almost looks like wrestling. I enjoyed it when I saw it, but I don't want people to purchase it with the wrong expectations.

George Harrison: Living In The Material World I still haven't seen Martin Scorsese's George Harrison doc, but it was much loved by those that did. It's a long one at 208 minutes and from that perspective I'm going to be sure and watch the three hour Woody Allen doc first, but one of these days I'll get around to this.

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 3

  • 26 February 2009
  • by Heather Buckley
  • Dread Central

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

The Final Chapter (read Part 2 here)! We have Howard the Duck, Freejack and Shyamalan flicks on the list; these are never good signs. Nonetheless we are bringing it all to you in full-color and in 3-D. (Ed. Note: Due to the economy, 3-D has been dropped and will be replaced by Smell-o-vision — check for your scratch and sniff cards in about 4-6 weeks.) Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. The Sound Editing section contains one too many references to Ron Silver, and at least two references to a Roger Corman film.

The visual effects category pulled on our heartstrings this year due to the loss of Stan Winston, who was noted en memoriam along with other heroes, Vampira, Leonard Rosenman and Charles H. Schneer

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 2

  • 25 February 2009
  • by Heather Buckley
  • Dread Central

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.

This part of the list also
