If you’ve already seen the movie Five Feet Apart and fell in love with the romance and love story, there’s no better place to look than to Netflix’s upcoming sequel (of sorts). This has become an especially
popular and highly anticipated debut since we all recently endured a similar struggle and challenges following the pandemic — allowing us to better understand the heartbreak and sorrow (as much as we can without experiencing the disease closer to home). In fact, dating after 2020 had many similarities to Will (Cole Sprouse) and Stella’s (Haley Lu Richardson) situation — with respect to the actual disease itself since cystic fibrosis is a serious genetic
disorder that has taken many lives.‘Fight Feet Apart’ was a hit in movie theaters
The story followed young lovers who meet in their hospital hall, both receiving treatments for cystic fibrosis and unable to get any closer than five feet, or they run the risk of spreading or contracting bacteria that could kill them. This remains true for another lovable character, Poe, who has been Stella’s best friend for years — but they were never able to so much as hug.
The movie was a hit in theaters and received a lot of positive responses. According to Forbes, ” The film earned an A+ from Cinemascore among audiences under 18″ and earned more than $13.8 million during its debut weekend (much more than the anticipated $10 million open).
A typical sequel isn’t possible, but a spiritual sequel is coming
While most automatically think of a sequel of Five Feet Apart, including some major players in the cast, it seems the ‘sequel’ to the romance story will actually take on a whole new story and cast.
If you remember the ending of Five Feet Apart, you would understand that it isn’t actually possible for a sequel. If not, a rewatch is certainly in order! Or, keep reading for a summary.
[SPOILER for Five Feet Apart ending]
After losing her best friend Poe, Stella gave in to her desire to live her life outside the hospital and went to see the lights with Will. This led to a huge problem as a car accident gave the hospital the lungs Stella needs to extend her lifespan five or more years, leading to many missed calls and messages on Stella’s end.
Just as Will got the message and began to persuade Stella to go back for the surgery, a terrible fall on the ice pulled Stella underwater. Will administered mouth-to-mouth to save her — not spreading his infection, fortunately. Unfortunately, the film ends with Stella alive and Will presumably dead/dying soon after bringing the lights to her since she didn’t get to see them.
‘All This Time’ cast members, premise, and release date
While the sequel won’t be a continuation of your beloved cast members in Five Feet Apart, it does go along the same lines of a ‘forbidden love’ or a true love story that seems just out of reach. This time, however, the creators take a spiritual turn by the look of the book’s sequel.
According to The Panther Tech, the next tragic love story to follow the film is called All This Time and will follow a high school quarterback who loses his girlfriend in a car crash. He sparks a romantic relationship with a new girl (Marley), but the tragic love story soon makes him question their existence at all.
The All This Time book was released in 2020, so it’s likely, we’ll see a Five Feet Apart sequel as soon as 2022. As of right now, there has not been a cast, trailer, or confirmed deal announced — although it’s rumored that Netflix will be taking it on here soon.
