Agatha Christie wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short stories in her lifetime, so it's no surprise her works are still being readapted.

Her classic crime novels have been adapted time and time again, including the BBC's And Then There Were None and Sir Kenneth Branagh's 2017 Murder on the Orient Express.

Hugh Laurie is set to write, direct, executive produce and act in the latest adaptation of 'Why Didn't They Ask Evans?' that was recently filmed in Shere and Guildford.

Plot

The latest Christie work being adapted is her 1934 novel 'Why Didn't They Ask Evans?' which centres around two friends, Bobby Jones and Lady Frances Derwent.

Bobby (played by Narnia and The Maze Runner's Will Poulter, 28) and Lady Frances (portrayed by Bohemian Rhapsody's Lucy Boynton, 27) set out to solve a murder mystery when Bobby and his mentor, Dr Alwyn Thomas, find a dying man.

In his last breath, the dying man asks "why didn't they ask Evans?" which appropriately became the title of the novel.

The only clue they have is a picture found in the dead man's pocket of a beautiful woman.

Previous adaptations and release date

Previous adaptations for television include productions in 1980, in 2011 and in 2013.

Hugh Laurie's adaptation will be for online digital video subscription service BritBox and is set to be released in 2022.

Filming

Filming has taken place across Surrey, including Guildford, Mickleham and Shere.

They appeared to use picturesque backdrops and period cars, suggesting they are staying faithful to the time period.

As well as Surrey, the cast and crew have been spotted filming in Wales. The novel itself is set in both Wales and Hampshire.

Why didn't they ask Evans film locations?

The series was filmed throughout the UK in 2021. Laurie made sure his adaptation stayed true to the setting of the source material, as production took place between June and August 2021 primarily on location in the UK. The mystery man takes a fall at Three Cliffs Bay in Wales.
