MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One of the men accused of killing Memphis rapper Young Dolph has hired his own attorney.

Justin Johnson, aka Straight Drop, the man accused of shooting and killing Memphis rapper Young Dolph is no longer being represented by Juni Ganguli.

Ganguli confirmed to FOX13 that Johnson hired his own lawyer, Luke Evans, out of Nashville.

Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton Jr., was gunned down last Nov. 17, 2021, at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies on Airways Boulevard when he went to buy cookies for his mom.

Minutes after he walked into the store, gunfire ripped through the store’s windows, leaving bullets and glass scattered in the front lobby and the 36-year-old rapper dead.

An autopsy would later reveal that Young Dolph suffered 22 gunshot wounds to the neck, back, and torso that day.

In January, Johnson was formally indicted in the killing.

Johnson faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and theft of property $10,000 - $60,000.

According to reports, one of the men accused of killing Young Dolph was assaulted in prison during a brazen attack.

Justin Johnson, AKA Straight Drop, is one of four men accused of planning and executing the Memphis rap star on November 17th as he shopped for cookies at a local bakery.

According to the coroner’s report, the murder suspects opened fire on Dolph and struck him over 22 times.

U.S. Marshals arrested Justin Johnson on January 11th in Indiana. He was eventually transferred to Memphis, where he pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder.

According to TMZ, Johnson was beat up in the Tennessee Shelby County jail while using the phone.

Johnson’s attorney Juni Gangulim said his client was in the middle of a conversation when another inmate walked up and punched him in the face.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Johnson was involved in an altercation with another inmate. However, they provided no further details due to an ongoing investigation.

Smith was arrested last month on a warrant for automobile theft relating to the getaway car used after the alleged murder, a white Mercedes-Benz sedan. He is being held without bail. Police allege the car was stolen on Nov. 10, a week before the shooting. Authorities recovered it three days after.

Young Dolph, legal name Adolph Thornton Jr., was shot and killed in Memphis on Nov. 17 at midday while visiting a cookie shop he loved, Makeda’s Butter Cookies. He was 36. He had survived previous shootings, two in 2017 alone.

Johnson had been using the accusations against him like a viral tweet, dropping a new song amid the height of his notoriety instead of turning himself in to police. He released “Track Hawk” Jan. 10, the same day he had promised he would to surrender himself into custody.

The district attorney for Shelby County, where the two men are charged, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
