What is Flag Day about?

Jennifer Vogel's father John was larger than life. As a child, Jennifer marveled at his magnetizing energy and ability to make life feel like a grand adventure. He taught her so much about love and joy, but he also happened to be the most notorious counterfeiter in US history. Based on a true story and directed by Sean Penn, Flag Day stars Penn and his real-life daughter Dylan Penn in an intimate family portrait about a young woman who struggles to rise above the wreckage of her past while reconciling the inescapable bond between a daughter and her father.

Not a picnic to watch, but an emotional movie that will touch you nonetheless

Verified purchase

You really have to consider the subject matter of this movie and realize upfront that it's not going to be a picnic to watch. This is a completely dysfunctional family. The father is delusional about what it takes to be a father. And the daughter only wants him -- expects him--to be a good daddy. I think the movie does a great job of showing that expectation and the father's failure to do so, despite his desire to do so.

I've read a lot of reviews about how repetitive the mistakes were and how they kept doing the same things over and over again, but I think that's pretty reflective of what a family is like at this level of dysfunction. I found the movie quite sad and disappointing. I didn't remember anything about this person, historically, so I was walking into it blindly, but especially after reading about Vogel, I feel like Penn did an amazing job with this movie and story-telling. I enjoyed the musical interludes and the attempts he made at connection, although frantic at times. I thought it was a great biopic or view into this man's life and what his family life must have been like from the daughter's perspective. I wouldn't wish this kind of life on anybody and I felt sadness and empathy for the struggle and I felt like the movie pulled that out of me.

So, I feel like the movie checked most of my boxes. Great music, cinemotography, acting, writing, etc. I didn't realize it was Penn's kids until reading about the movie afterward. I think they did a great job. I've not been a huge fan of Katheryn Winnick's acting in the past. I didn't even recognize her at first in this movie (did she get some work done?). But I feel like she did a good job as well.

A life of lies

Verified purchase

Sean Penn plays John Vogel, who was born on June 14th, Flag Day. So in a way, each celebration of Flag Day was a celebration of him. A line from a famous movie of “you can’t handle the truth” really applies to John. For him, everything is a con. He has a daughter Jennifer who plays a major role in the movie, and a son, and a terrible marriage which he abandons. Sean Penn plays a powerful role where he cannot even admit the truth to himself. He winds up getting caught doing a bank robbery, and is sentenced to 15 years in prison. Meanwhile, Jennifer leaves her mother, wanders on her own and then settles down to become a journalist. She is trying to develop a new life for herself and ignores the letters John sent her from prison. Suddenly, John shows up saying he has a new life, a good business and will change. But how will that work out? It is really about people who are on the economic bottom of society so it certainly is not a feel good movie. But it is compelling and intense.

If you're not from a broken home it may come off as slow or boring.

Verified purchase

I will preface this review by saying that the movie is good. It is a bit on the slow side, but it's entertaining enough and the soundtrack is pretty decent. Where this movie shines is in the story, and thus, if you can't relate to it you may find the film to be overall very boring. However, for those of us that come from broken or troubled homes, who know how it feels to be screaming and fighting with a parent knowing that the argument will never make any difference and that the home will be just as broken as it was at the beginning of the argument, this movie makes sense. I don't mean that to endear this film to people who once had an argument about the color of their hair with their parents, but to folks whose parents were fundamentally broken, either emotionally or just pathological liars (like in this movie). If you come from a home like THAT, this movie will make sense to you. This movie will have meaning to you. The cinematography is good, the acting is outstanding (as can be expected from Sean Penn, though his daughter was outstanding as well, clearly following in her dad's footsteps). I would recommend this but only to someone who can draw similarities between the plot and their personal histories.

This is a tough one to review. It's not memorable or forgettable. NOT a good one for date night

Verified purchase

Really good acting - especially with Penn and his daughter (she was outstanding). However, it's not going to be for everyone and certainly not a good one for a date night. I won't ever watch it again and honestly wouldn't even recommend or even talk to friends about it. I watched this alone on a week night and made it to the end, which I can't say for some movies. BUT, it wasn't all that bad...OR good! Haha. Like I said, this is a tough one. I would have probably ranked about a 3.6 out of 5 but settled on 4 out of 5.

So Sad

Verified purchase

I noticed that some other reviewers found this movie to be boring and repetitive with too much screaming and crying. I found it to be exactly what it should be......story of what life is really like with a parent you want to believe in and love, but can't. The parent gives you such fun and happiness for short periods of time and promises the world to you, but they are liars and heartbreakers who should never have had children.

Excellent, this is all about a young lady trying to rise above the negatives she has been handed

Verified purchase

It's funny that some people did not like this movie. Maybe it does strike a chord in those of us who always believe that: with intention and love we can rise above adversity and become who we really want to be. Perserverance is something that I admire tremendously. It would be really difficult to see someone you are close to (in this case, your own father) make decisions that put others and self in danger. There is a feeling of self-destruction. As I watched this movie, I wanted to know why John kept up with his sabotage. I do like movies that have a psychological element, true stories are interesting, the makers of this movie picked a good story and everything was done really well. I think it is also interesting that some people might think that counterfeiting is a way out from the dull humdrum of what many of us go through. This goes along with the idea of easy or unlimited cash coming your way. Jennifer saw right through her dad wanting to buy her a Jaguar. There was character developement and it was obvious that she wanted to lead a clean life and came away with some values despite what she had been handed in life. She saw/wanted to see the good in her dad although it was really difficult.

Dylan Penn inherited her parents' talent

Verified purchase

This movie is a bit slow, but worth making the effort to watch the Penns traverse the emotional landscape of a dysfunctional family who keep wanting something from each other that just cannot be. Many of us can relate to the cycle of hope and despair along with the resilience of the human spirit
