Published It all just sounds like oooh oooh ooh ooh ooh Okay, so Bruno-baby's "pride, ego, needs, and selfish ways" (geez, that's quite the enumeration) let a "good strong woman walk out of [his] life". Fine, boo-hoo. Now, does this make her *sound* like a strong woman? "I should have bought you flowers and held your hand All we can observe from the above paragraph is that 1. he also should have given her rose petal baths, offered her a subscription to Oprah Winfrey's network and named his cat after her 2. Bruno Mars probably failed his English class. Also: what's with the hat? Doesn't he know modern women go for guys wearing Stetsons? It was in this month's issue of Cosmopolitan. No, really. The funny thing is, this "emotional ballad" is actually far from being the worst thing he's done. Maybe if it was sung by fake Elton John instead of fake Michael Jackson... actually, at this point, if would have been better even if performed by a mock turtle or a faux leopard. Published His first song (maybe except for "Locked Out of Heaven") which isn't ridiculously embarrassing and has some kind of atmosphere. Yeah, this song has a mood. It's just okey. Published You can already hear an improvement from the treacly nonsense of his first album--you could imagine someone like Tobias Jesso, Jr. having written this--but the newfound maturity in its sound is let down by his shrill whiny voice. Published Workplace Jams, #117 How's the song? I see some people calling it a decent piano ballad. I guess, but his voice is still insufferable and drags it right down. Nobody but him has ever managed to wring less vulnerability out of a voice this high-pitched. He manages to sound whiny without sounding at all like he deserves anyone's pity, and I just can't stand it. Bruno Mars would eventually get better, but it'd be a while. How is it at work? Among the most annoying of all the ballads on a playlist full of annoying ballads. Eugh. Overall verdict: Rancid Jam Published Idk it’s a generic piano ballad. I’m actually okay with Bruno on this song, even though I don’t usually like him. Not good but not worth getting mad about. 5/10. Published I usually hate radio piano ballads, and this doesn't hurt my ears at all, so props to Bruno. Not his best work by a long shot, though. Published I strongly dislike the lyrics to "When I Was Your Man." The song characterizes Bruno Mars's lover as unnecessarily flighty and demanding, despite the fact that Bruno presents himself as an uncaring, thoughtless jerk throughout the piece. There's no reason for the listener to want Bruno Mars to get back with this girl, as there's no indication that he has learned his lesson. I appreciate how he uses the last verse to indicate that he does want better things for his girl, but it's delivered in perhaps too subdued a tone to really leave a strong impression. By contrast, I do think the stripped-down vocals and piano accompaniment really works to Bruno Mars's advantage. Unlike "Grenade" and "It Will Rain," Bruno Mars's other big piano ballads, there are no irritating electronic production blasts getting in the way of the melody. There's also just the right amount of soul to keep the song moving forward. It's by no means a "classic" in terms of its sound, but I do buy the sentiment when it's delivered with this kind of production. Maybe the song will get better with age, but it just breaks even for me at this point. Published Votes are used to help determine the most interesting content on RYM.
