Wondering if 2022 bikes will be in good supply as the year wears on, or if shortages in components will continue to hamper availability. I wasn't looking last year when bikes were coming out.... were there a lot of bikes available at first?

I've seen a handful of manufacturers switch to 2022 offerings already. Some just different colors minor spec tweaks and healthy price bumps. I imagine that'll be common in the near term. Lots of factors causing prices to increase, no real quick solution either. I can't imagine a company releasing a bike with lots of inventory right now. They may be fine on frames, but building complete bikes has to be a challenge for every manufacturer regardless of size.

if your looking for a bike that is 3k and lower good luck, any of the more $$$ bikes, those seem to be in stock without any issues

Not like that at all in my experience recently trying to get my hands on a bike. I was wanting higher end and settled on the mid $4K version. I expanded my search to a 14 hour drive, wasn't picky on color and had several different bike brands I was willing to pull the trigger on a moments notice.

Ive been looking for a bike for my kid for the last couple months and just ordered a bike for my kid. You can walk into any of the local shops and get the carbon stump jumpers, rocky mountain, yeti etc. Nothing in the 3k range. maybe just the right place at the right time.

I was in the specialized bike shop yesterday and the guy at the shop I've known for years told me about a guy from California who flew here, bought the new Stumpjumper Evo, boxed it up and shipped it to his house and flew home. I don't think they're just sitting on the shelf for anyone to grab anywhere in the country. Odd sizes may be hanging around a little longer than some. But for the most part, they hard to find no matter what.

E-bikes on the other hand are littering the sales floor.

i talked to a guy that was in montana a few months ago, he said the bike shop there was full and had tons of boxed up bikes in the back. I guess it just depends on where you live. So cal trails right now are insanely crowded, but its also good to see people out riding bikes.

Interesting, not sure where you shop at but I was just at Fullerton bikes and Buena Park bikes, walked in and bought a brand new Fathom 2. They had a few in boxes. However, I am new to mountain biking so a few in boxes might be lower than normal.

There will be some amount of shortages for a couple more years. I heard some BMX manufacturers are doing a second run of 2021 bikes to try to meet demand, and most suppliers have nothing right now. We're about to do a massive 2022 order for our shop and we were informed we would be allotted a certain amount of bikes, and we have to order everything at once- no ordering of different sizes/models later. What we get is all we get till next year.

Expect to see a lot of small shops closing down.

Why? When I worked in a shop I was always told that service was what kept shops alive, not bike sales.

My girlfriend and I recently bought a shop I had worked in off and on over the last eight years. The way the previous owner modeled the business, bike sales made the money and then cheap labor was just something to keep busy and serve the community.

We've been raising labor prices (they were the same I was charging in another small shop I managed in 2005!) but it's hard to make money when you can't get chains, cassettes and derailleurs.

That makes sense, I hadn't thought about getting parts for maintenance. I was just thinking on terms of straight bike sales.

The situation will get better in 2022, and the suppliers I know are already actively stocking

Why is there a bike shortage?

Industry insiders say the pandemic-fueled bike and component shortage will likely continue for the foreseeable future. With COVID and its ensuing variants forcing people outdoors to recreate, many bike shops have juggled this greater demand with increasingly unreliable inventories.

Why is there a bike shortage in Australia?

The demand for bikes was skyrocketing, but stores couldn't re-stock because there was simply nothing to buy. The issue was so bad that some shops had to employ security guards to protect staff from furious cycle-deprived consumers. This is what we have been reduced to.

Why are mountain bikes so hard to find?

The reason is a combination of supply-chain delays and a surge in interest around biking and other outdoor activities due to the pandemic. “We're seeing a very large increase in ridership and our supply has dwindled so much,” said Heather Mason, president of the National Bicycle Dealers Association, a US trade group.
