  • TV (12 eps)
  • 2021

Expert gamer Tomozaki Fumiya doesn’t exactly fit in, but he wishes he did. With no written rules for success and gameplay that doesn’t work in his favor, the real world seems impossible for someone like him. But, like any noob, all he really needs are some strategies and a seasoned player like Aoi Hinami to help him. Hopefully with her guidance, Tomozaki will gain the experience he needs.

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki and My Dress-Up Darling both have main character who are loners and the female mc being the popular one

Akshay2021 says...

Very similar plot.

In both, the mc is distant from others and fmc helps in connecting with others.

Kidceph says...

Socially awkward guy paired with popular girl thanks to hobbies outside of her usual friend group. Dress-Up doesn't explore the side characters in the way that Tomozaki does, but the characters in each are all to die for.

Timed says...

Within both of these series, the male MC is more reserved with social settings leaving it to the female MC of the series to draw them out. This stems from a intrest early on in the series, Gojo sewing in My Dress-Up Darling and Tomozaki being top ranker in a video game for Bottom Tier Character.

In my opinion, these two anime are kinda similar to each other. The main characters are both uncomfortable / ill at ease with girls and some situations are funny because of that. Moreover, both girls in the two anime seem comfortable talking about things that are a bit embarassing or even doing them, but it's not always true :)

One more time it's juste in my opinion, but I think that if you liked one you will also like the other one.

2 wholesome rom coms. Dress up has a bit more lewdness to it. But in the end you are captivated with how wholesome the love story is.

Tsukimi is an otaku and jellyfish enthusiast whose only means of coping with the world is to reject it: she and her friends live in a house they declare a man-free zone, generally avoid 'stylish people', and spend their days blissfully bonding over geeky rituals. As misfortune would have it, their convenient existence is about to be turned on its head by the arrival of Kuranosuke, a seemingly beautiful young woman who is actually a beautiful young man. While he may be strange even by their standards, Kuranosuke embodies everything Tsukimi secretly dreams of being - a princess as ethereal as a floating jellyfish - and promises the kind of mind-boggling adventures only possible when geek meets chic!

Both series feature an awkward and shy protagonist who meets an outgoing and fashionable individual who falls under the gal/gyaru umbrella.

Both series have a  heavy focus on fashion and otaku culture. But My Dress Up Darling focus's more on cosplay where as Princess Jellyfish focus on fashion as a whole.

Both are about isolated male protagoinst to find new love/friendship

If you after slice of life/romance comedy both are good bets.

Dress-up darling is more on the ecchi side and starts of a bit slower but from ep4 onwards is great.

Chitaka says...

Both of these anime involve fashion and the process of making clothes. Both involve a girl who wants to model clothes and a boy who wants to make clothes. My Dress Up Darling is just from a more Otaku standpoint with cosplay where Smile Down the Runway is a high fashion standpoint but the dedication to their craft and learning about the process of clothing design feels similar.

Verdict. My Dress-Up Darling was heartfelt and entertaining, and the strength of its main characters deservedly carried it into the public's consciousness. It wasn't perfect and had its issues, but the positives outweighed the negatives by quite a bit.

Is My Dress

With the anime charts prominently being dominated by shonen titles, My Dress-Up Darling brings some much-needed freshness to the anime world. The series was one of the biggest highlights of the winter 2022 season, especially for those with a keen appetite for the slice-of-life and romantic comedy genres.
