Why visit Mexico?

Mexico is a vast country; its landscape varies from desert plains, arid plateaus, emerald rainforests, and soaring peaks. It is sandwiched by beaches, and lapped by the rippling waters of Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It has seen the footsteps of ancient nations shape its scenery with mysterious pyramids, only to be remade by colonial conquest. It is a place that has blended its indigenous personality with multiculturalism, and its history, its food, its architecture and its people will not fail to impress.

Things to do in Mexico

For those sun worshippers seeking the coast, there are two sides to choose from; the first is the Riviera Maya and Cancun on the Caribbean Sea. This region offers up all the staples of paradise, with pristine white sands, azure waters and shading palm trees, but also comes with easy access to some of the country’s most remarkable ruins.

Nearby the Riviera you will find Tulum, the coastal walled city built by the Mayans, and further inland, you’ll discover what is arguably Mexico’s most famous ancient site: Chichen Itza. Worth every second of your time, this extraordinary site is a Mayan city that has stood for almost 1000 years, and you can stand beneath the Warriors’ Temple, El Castillo, and the observatory, El Caracol, and be taken to a time before Columbus and his many even thought of setting their sails in search of India.

On the Pacific Coast, you will find some of the best whale watching and diving by visiting Baja California, and get a more authentic taste of Mexico’s coast by spending time in Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta.

For cities, you cannot skip Mexico City, the gritty but beautiful capital. This city has a heritage heart, with some of the country’s most impressive colonial architecture, including its main plaza, which comes complete with the National Palace, and the stunning Metropolitan Cathedral. For a slightly smaller fish to fry, but boasting enough architectural beauties to sustain your interest, head instead to Guanajuato, more of a town than a city, but replete with Baroque churches, pretty squares and a hopping nightlife.

Best time to visit Mexico

· Rule of thumb for Mexico is that the best season to travel is between December and April, when the rains haven’t set in, and neither have the hottest summer months. This season is ideal for city tours, exploring ancient ruins, or sunning yourself on a beach.

· On the Pacific coast, January and February are great for whale watching. Whilst March to April are great for the Yucatan peninsula or Mexico City, when the temperatures are around 26°C.

· May to August are when the rains come to town, and range from day-long affairs to short and sharp downpours. September and October are when the hurricane season hits the country, and so this time is best avoided.

Flights to Mexico

· You can fly to a number of airports in Mexico, as this country has many international hubs. However, the main ones for touring the most popular parts of the country are usually Mexico City International Airport (MEX), the Cancun International Airport (CUN), and Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). There are also smaller international hubs like Acapulco International Airport (ACA) that are dotted all around the country, so it is worth double checking for connecting flights to these also if you are heading off the beaten track.

· All flights bound for Mexico tend to leave from the large aviation facilities in Melbourne (MEL), Sydney (SYD) and Brisbane (BNE). Expect one or two diversions, usually through Los Angeles (LAX), Atlanta (ATL), or Houston (IAH).

· Flying to Mexico is usually done on carriers like Virgin Australia, American Airlines, Qantas, United, LATAM Airlines Group, Delta, British Airways and Air Canada.

Visa requirements

· Australians do not need a visa for Mexico, but they do need a valid passport with at least six months left on it, and they also need to fill out a Multiple Immigration Form (FMM) upon arrival.
