The 1988 John Landis classic is often regarded as one of Eddie’s Murphy’s finest outings, and generally considered one of the best comedies of the 1980s. Fortunately, audiences have been invited back to bask amongst a wealth of familiar faces in Craig Brewer’s 2021 sequel, Coming 2 America. While Akeem prepares to take the throne, he discovers that he had a son (played by Jermaine Fowler) with a Queens local (Leslie Jones). Intent to find his heir, he heads back to America and returns to Zamunda with his son. Of course, Eddie is back as Akeem and many of the 1988 cast members reprise their roles, including Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, James Earl Jones and more. Although, Patrice McDowell, Cleo’s younger daughter and Lisa’s sister (played by Allison Dean) doesn’t appear. So, Why didn’t Allison Dean return for Coming 2 America?
Why didn’t Allison Dean return for Coming 2 America?It’s uncertain why Allison Dean wasn’t cast in Coming 2 America, but it’s perhaps not too surprising that she didn’t return. After starring in a couple of episodes of the TV series Girlfriends between 2006 and 2007, she didn’t return to screens until 2019, and even then, that was for a short film called The Talk (she played Tasha Wright). Nevertheless, she’s set to star in a TV movie called Zodiac (Gaia), which is currently in post-production. Coming 2 America began filming back in August 2019, and it’s always possible that she was busy at the time. Besides, it’s not like she’s the only one of the original cast not to return… Firstly, there’s no Samuel L. Jackson cameo (he played the armed robber at McDowell’s) and then the likes of Eriq La Salle (Darryl) don’t appear either. At the end of Coming to America, Darryl climbs through Patrice’s window and it’s suggested that they will have a future together. Taking this into account, the actors’ absence from Coming 2 America may encourage audiences to fill in the blanks. Maybe the two became a couple and set off to start a new life together; after all, Darryl wanted to marry into the family.
