Wd - easystore 12tb external usb 3.0 hard drive review

3.0 out of 5 starsTLDR Buy it, shuck it, use it internally or with a sabrent sata dock. Thank me later.

WD seems to habitually make very weak usb cables for these drives. They aren't meant to be moved or used in any way that might strain the cord. Light strain mind you, because I don't yank my cords or treat them badly. The thing is, the faulty cord will short out, disconnecting the drive while its still plugged in. This isn't something you want happening regularly, and I already have a 3tb WD green that corrupted, because of the same weak cord they insist on using. I bought that 3tb back in 2014. I got this 12tb this year, and it has the same issue. So to ensure my drive remains usable, I shucked it. Which means I removed it from the case. It now rests in a sabrent dock, and the cord that came with that is definitely not as flimsy as wd's. The performance of the drive itself is phenomenal. But WD has got to do better with their cords.

This review is about the SINGLE DRIVE 8TB version of the WD MyBook. Green & white cardboard box, black plastic drive case. No Encryption. Go ahead & buy it, it is ok. :-)SPEED: The drive is faster than I expected. It took about 1 day to copy 5.14 TB to it via USB 3. Those were mostly music files 3MB to 60mb plus some videos. I did not time it or watch it closely. You can easily play movies or music from this drive without skipping.HEAT: the drive did NOT get hot. Not even very warm while chugging away for almost a whole day relentlessly copying over 5 TB of data. The drive has vents on the 2 ends. You are supposed to put the vent side up, so the heat can exit. That means the drive will be standing on end, which is probably not how you were going to place it. There are rubber feet on the other end. I suspect that the people who said this drive runs hot did not stand the drive up as intended.

So far so good. A bit slow for nowadays thought the capacity is the contemporary one. It's not the 7200 rpm certainly. Forget it. It's the 5700 rpm one(still not the fastest experienced in this class writing speed). If it's still up and works in a decade or two, and is still compatible with your computer and OS so you can plug and play, it's the main thing these ones are produced for at all. If it's not, it'd be another fall in the design engineering and/or QA/QC

I gave this drive 5 stars because it works great. It's fast and easy to use. However, I was a little disappointed because this is supposed to be a 12TB drive and there was only 10.9TB available on it. I was so surprised that I looked at the box to be sure that they sent the right one. I understand that some of the drive software may use up some of the space for operating reasons, but a loss of 1.1TB seems excessive to me. So, this is more like an 11TB drive and not a 12TB drive. That being said, the drive works great and it does what I need it to do. Also, I think the price is fair for an 11TB drive. I just wish they would advertise it for the space that it actually has. I always prefer honesty.

I bought the 12 TB size. Says 12 TB on box, but formatted it's only 10.95 TB useable. Which seems to me to only be an 11 TB drive within the enclosure. That's enough for my use, I just feel it should have said 11 TB instead of 12... I haven't looked at how it's partitioned in disk management yet, but I don't know why an entire TB would be invisible to my system.

I gave the "Tech Support" a 3 star, but I have not contacted them.

So far this has been a great storage device for my son. He games a lot and this has really come in handy.

I am so pleased with this storage device. It holds a "ton" of information, is very light weight and small. It was easy to use.
