Tyler Gregory Okonma, better known by his stage name Tyler, the Creator, is an American rapper and music producer. He was born on March 6, 1991, in Ladera Heights, California. Sadly, Tyler never met his father, being raised by his mother alone in California. As a child, he would create make-believe album covers of his own and replace the real covers of his CD’s with them. He also learnt to play the piano.
In 2007, at just age 16, he co-founded the alternative hip hop label Odd Future with three other up-and-coming rappers. They put out their first mixtape, "The Odd Future Tape", in 2007. Tyler went on to release his own mixtape, titled "Bastard", the following year. He produced a music video for one of his new singles, “Yonkers”, in 2011. He’s been known to direct many of his own music videos ever since. The attention his first clip gained resulted in him winning the Best New Artist Award at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
With his success, soon enough, he, along with his hip hop troupe Odd Future, was signed by a major player in the music industry - Red Distribution/Sony. Tyler’s first major label studio album was released in May 2011, with the title “Goblin”. As the title suggests, his early solo work was mainly horror-themed.
"Goblin" was a moderate commercial success, peaking at the #5 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. "Yonkers" was featured on the tracklist, as well as the hits “Sandwiches” and “She”. Tyler went on to release 5 additional studio albums since: “Wolf” (2013), “Cherry Bomb” (2015), “Flower Boy” (2017), “Igor” (2019), and the new Tyler, the Creator album “Call Me If You Get Lost” (2021). "Flower Boy" was the best performing among them with 1.2 million copies sold worldwide.
So far, Tyler, the Creator’s greatest hits have been “Yonkers” (2010), “EARFQUAKE” (2019), and “Who Dat Boy” (2017). Also, he was featured on the 2018 song by Kali Uchis “After the Storm”. He has also been hosting the annual music festival Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival since 2012. Check where the nearest Tyler, the Creator concert is to you on the page above.
