The Tortoise and the Hare Adapted from the original work of Aesop’s Fables Illustrated by Andrew Gray www.teachtown.com Once there was a hare who was very proud of 1 how fast he was. He met a tortoise who moved very slowly. The hare told the tortoise, “You will never be as fast as me!” The tortoise asked the hare, “Would you like to race?” “Yes, of course!” said the hare. “I know I will win.” 2 The hare was sure he would win. The tortoise and the hare went to the starting line. 3 “Ready, set, go!” said the tortoise. Away they went. The hare was much faster than the tortoise. He was very far ahead. The tortoise was so far 4 away, the hare could not see him! “I think I will just stop and take a quick nap,” said 5 the hare. “The tortoise will never catch up to me.” He laid down and fell asleep. The tortoise kept going as the hare was sleeping. After a while, he passed the sleeping hare. The hare 6 did not know that the tortoise was now in the lead. The hare woke up and realized that the tortoise 7 had just passed him. The hare could not believe it! Away he ran toward the finish line. He saw the tortoise ahead of him. Just then, the tortoise crossed the finish line. 8 The tortoise beat the hare! Even though he was not as fast as the hare, the 9 tortoise won. It did not matter that the tortoise was slow. It only mattered that he kept going and did not give up.
