Chicago Saturday in the park is a classic 70's Anthem, a stunning tribute to Central Park in New York. 45 years old and still sounds fantastic!

Does 'Saturday in the Park' sound suspiciously similar to 'You Won't See Me', a relatively minor work by a group known as the Beatles? Yes it does. You may not agree, but I remember reading that this song was inspired by the Beatles' tune. (And it plays to me like a Sir Macca penned song.) Making its debut on the Beatles' 'Rubber Soul' album, 'You Won't See Me' gets lost in the shuffle of the superior material that album produced...'Michelle', 'I've Just Seen A Face', 'Norwegian Wood'. So, some six years later, Chicago comes out with 'Saturday in the Park', and it's a big hit. A bright, happy song featuring those wonderful Chicago horns (which sound about as hip to me as wet farts). Far from being poets or even adept songwriters, 'R. Lamm's' composition relies on redundancy to fill the musical lines....'I think it was the fourth of July' is repeated twice in case you didn't hear him the first time. That's just bad songwriting.

This is my Subjective Opinion, so I hope I haven't ruined big Chicago fans' day. 'Saturday in the Park' may be a fair amount of people's favorite song. I wrote a review of this because the song annoyed me from Day One. Being rather musical myself, I heard the ripoff of the old Beatles' tune in my mind back in 1972. My conclusion was only supported by reading someone from Chicago note that he had 'You Won't See Me' in mind when he came up with the 'wonderful' 'Saturday in the Park'.

The only thing possibly worse than 'Saturday in the Park' in the Chicago catalog is the much overrated, overplayed 'Colour My World'. Full of empty platitudes and a melody little more engaging than 'Feelings', the Morris Albert 'classic', this trite writing foreshadows Peter Cetera's garbage known as 'The Glory of Love'.

In short, Chicago remains to me to this day the antithesis of 'hip'. These clowns rarely rocked and rolled and they made a career out of penning what McCartney rightly called 'silly love songs'. Chicago makes the early pop of the 1960s sound like Beethoven compared to their treacle. To be fair to Chicago, McCartney, once he went solo, never rose to the stature of his work with the Beatles. 'The Beatles Second Album' remains wonderful compared to any of the solo work of Ex-Beatles. Anyone want my copy of 'McCartney'? I'll give it to you. It's in mint condition. Whoops, sorry, I dumped it off at a thrift shop for free. It's sitting next to Herb Alpert and Ray Conniff and Barbra Streisand goodies...

Chicago's “Saturday in the Park” (or “SITP” as many fans refer to it) has often been called the quintessential 1970s single. Practically every music fan of the era is familiar with “Saturday in the Park.” Chicago V, from which the single is pulled, is almost completely composed by keyboardist/vocalist Robert Lamm.
