New york city body painting day

A fascinating event that I attended last summer, was held at an area close to the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, it was second annual NYC Bodypainting Day 2015. I guess it’s one of those things that if you don’t give it a lot a thought and you just look at the finished product, you don’t realize the amount of work that goes into bodypainting an individual. The amount of work the artist puts into their work and the arduous amount of patience their subject which is their canvas has to have while the process is being done was something I did not realize until I witnessed it myself. I don’t think I have the patience or the boldness to stand there and have my body painted. As you can see in the image, the artwork is fantastic and varied.

There was a theme, it was “What the world needs now…..” which was chosen to encourage the bodypainting artist to share their vision of what would make the World a better place. Interestingly enough, after they were painted, the subject and artists boarded two double-decker buses with an open top deck and went by the United Nations to show the vision of the artists. Being a Saturday, I don’t think there were many at the UN, maybe some tourist. There was a strong New York City Police presence as there are at all public affairs in the city which is much appreciated

The 3rd Annual New York City Body Painting Day held today, July 9 at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza (47th St. & 2nd Ave.), with 100 artists painted 100 nude models of all shapes, sizes, ages, races, and genders.

This year's theme is "Inner Beauty", encouraging artists to draw inspiration from their model's energy and character as they create their art. After the painting session, both the artists and models take a ride on double decker buses through the streets of Manhattan to share the artwork and body-positive message with the city.

BODYPAINTING DAY is a public art event produced by Human Connection Arts in which a select group of talented artists paint on the bodies of nude models over a 4 hour period in full public view.

Bodypainting Day is founded by artist Andy Golub, who has been painting bodies in the public streets of NYC since 2007. Bodypainting Day started in 2014 in New York City.

In 2015, Bodypainting Day added the city of Amsterdam. In 2016, added the city of San Francisco. And in 2017, added the city of Berlin.

The ARTISTS share their voice with the public. So often, the artists skills are in full view, but their voices are hidden, promoting a product or focusing on sales. Bodypainting Day is a non-commercial event that focuses on the artists voice. This year’s theme “Humanity” challenges artists to seek what is on the inside of their model to inspire a painting on the outside.
