The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships often produce world-class times, future world championships team members, and even global medalists. This year should be no different. What to Watch at the 2022 NCAA Championships

Women’s Long Distance

The women’s 10,000-meter field at last year’s outdoor championships.

With number one seed Abby Nichols of Colorado opting for the 5,000 meters, the women’s 10,000-meter title is anyone’s to win. In fact, her younger teammate Emily Covert stands as the top seed on race day. But she’ll have her hands full with SEC champion Mercy Chelangat of Alabama, NCAA indoor 5,000-meter fourth-placer Lauren Gregory of Arkansas, and numerous women with personal bests under 33 minutes.

On Saturday evening’s 5,000 meters, Katelyn Tuohy of NC State should take her first NCAA crown—but only if she can beat a fresh Nichols and a doubling-back Chelangat.

NCAA indoor 5,000-meter champion Courtney Wayment of BYU is a steeplechase specialist, and hopes to bump up from fourth last year to first this year. Her main competitors are West Virginia’s Ceili McCabe and New Mexico’s Elise Thorner.

Women’s Middle Distance

Louisiana State Univeristy’s Katy-Ann McDonald and Kennesaw State’s Sarah Hendrick own the fastest 800-meter times this season, both running 2:00.98—but are they fast enough to hold off challenges from indoor NCAA third and fourth placers Claire Seymour of BYU and McKenna Keegan of Villanova?

In the women’s 1500, Sintayehu Vissa of Ole Miss owns the top seed with her 4:08.72. She was also the runner-up indoors, only losing to Michaela Degenero of Colorado, who is also in this race. Add in NCAA bronze medalist Ellie Leather of Cincinnati, and the road to victory is no longer assured.

Men’s Long Distance

Northern Arizona University senior Abdihamid Nur swept the 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the NCAA indoor championships. He also owns the collegiate record in the 5,000 meters—but will only contest the 10,000 meters on Wednesday night. He’ll face number one seed Adriaan Wildschutt of Florida State University, who has run 27:38 this season, and NCAA cross-country championships third-placer Athanas Kioko of Campbell University.

With Nur only running the 10,000 meters, the 5,000 meters on Friday night is wide open. Morgan Beadlescomb of Michigan State has great credentials—a 3:52.03 mile personal best and the second-fastest 5,000 time this season behind Nur—but he’ll have to hold off number one seed Brian Fay of Washington and seventh-year senior Olin Hacker of Wisconsin.

Two athletes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase have run under the 8:30 barrier this year—Ahmed Jaziri of Eastern Kentucky and Montana States’s Duncan Hamilton. But a win for either of them is far from guaranteed, as a slew of athletes who have run under 8:35 are right behind them.

Men’s Middle Distance

The men’s 1500 meters is typically a tactical affair, and the race is so loaded with talent this year that it’s hard to predict who will win. Expect to see NCAA 1500-meter record holder Eliud Kipsang of Alabama, NCAA indoor mile champion Mario Garcia Romo of Ole Miss, and Moroccan Olympian Anass Essayi of South Carolina battle in the final on Friday—assuming nothing goes awry in Wednesday’s prelims.

Texas Tech’s Moad Zahafi is on a mission to win the men’s 800-meter title. He ran his personal best of 1:43.69 in Florida earlier this season against two other title contenders— Brandon Miller of Texas A&M and SEC champion Navasky Anderson of Mississippi State—winning by nearly three seconds in the process. At the NCAA west regional, Zahafi ran a 1:44 in the final to beat Miller again. The Texas Tech student-athlete remains the favorite going into the championships.
