Lord huron meet me in the city

"Meet Me in the City" is a dark, seductive song on Long Lost. It was teased on the Lord Huron Seance.

The narrator asks someone to join them in the city for a wild night. They also tell this individual to leave their "ball and chain" so presumably the subject of their song is in another committed relationship, and seems to justify this infidelity by singing "if our love is so wrong, tell me: why does it feel so right?"

Lord Huron - Meet Me In The City (Official Audio)

The video for "Meet Me in the City" contains black and white imagery of a road leading into a city, where the buildings move and later tilt and distort in a disorienting manner. It has scenes from the perspective of the road, showing wind turbines, streetlights, and underpasses. It also has a scene of a figure in a suit affected by time's blur walking in front of an image of the headlights of traffic through a chainlink fence, as well as legs in a skirt and high heels walking while superimposed over an image of the city. There is also footage of a man with time's blur possibly on a train, a room with a bed, and walking along rainy streets. There is a focus on the dividing line of the road at the beginning and end of the video.

Lord huron meet me in the city

The suited figure in "Meet Me in the City" with the smokey time's blur effect.

The time's blur on the walking figure streams higher off his head than more typical depictions, potentially evoking cigarette smoke or perhaps for some other symbolic or simply stylistic reason.

Annotated lyrics

Come on and meet me in the city[note 1]
Get your courage up and take the highway down
Put on the dress you wore the night we met[note 2][note 3]
You and me are gonna paint this town

We'll go wild and seize the night
Am I not the one you're dreaming of, my angel?

Go home and say goodbye forever
Tell your ball and chain you won't be back around
Forget the life you had and don't look back
Get your courage up and drink this down

If our love is so wrong, tell me: why does it feel so right?
Am I not the one you're dreaming of, my angel?

Meet me in the city, baby
Meet me in the city, baby
Meet me in the city, baby
Meet me in the city, baby

Am I not the one you wanna love forever?

Potential lyrical references

Frequently, Lord Huron's songs explore similar themes, sometimes they have stories that are covered by more than one song. These lyrical connections are merely for reference:

  1. Contrast with Frankie Lou and Claude Fox's "Meet Me in the Woods"
  2. "The Night We Met"
  3. "Secret of Life" - "Put on your new dress tonight"

Questions and fan theories

  • What character, if any, performs this song?
  • Who are the subjects of this song?
    • Given the detail about leaving a "ball and chain," it is possible this is a song addressing Lee Green, fiancée of Buck Vernon in Vide Noir, and from some other male character's perspective, possibly asking her to come to Los Angeles, though it is not yet known.

Sources

I think virtually every track (minus time’s blur) is incredibly tight meticulous, but we need talk about just how GOOD Meet me in the city is 🤌🏽🤌🏽. Severely underrated in my opinion, but the overall composition, song structure, imagery, and the attention to DETAIL is off the charts.

During the climax of the song, the way the vocals are layered, violin orchestra is used to show kinda give a “pushback” to the guitar, the ghost like voice when Ben sings “meet me in the city,” I can go on and on.

While it’s not my favorite song, it’s definitely too 3 with what do it mean and Love me like you used to.
