Who is definitely a movie worth watching. Completely different from most films I watched in the genre, with a blend of modern cinematography mixed together with a sense of an old school noir film. It will definitely keep you guessing is she crazy or is this a real promise no spoilers. At times it could be a bit slow or redundant but I think that that’s kind of the whole noir film thing. Again though the cinematography was very modern, costume was amazing, and it will keep you guessing throughout the movie. I gave it four stars because I would say watch it for free on an app, it doesn’t seem really worth spending $2-$7 to watch. Other than of course to see the lovely Anna Taylor Joy. I was gorgeous at her age and definitely wouldn’t trade places at her age with anyone else, with the exception of maybe her! Course now twice+ her age, I would definitely trade places with her. Of course that would really confuse my 7 year old!

I grew up in the ‘60’s and was hooked by the premise of this movie because…well, we’d all love to go back in time. So through the first couple of nights I’m really digging this story-especially when she walks out of the alley and sees the huge marquee of Thunderball. Its a fantasy come to life. I would love to revisit that time. But then as the story goes darker and darker I’m not enjoying it as much. I’m disappointed. Its still a good plot twist but its not what I came for. And there is an implausable element to it. I would have liked to have been more immersed in the Swinging Sixties London Mod scene rather than its seedy underbelly. Also Diana Rigg should have gotten a higher cast credit since she was so pivotal to the story. And why not use an actress a bit more like Mrs Peel in appearance (but not enough to give the plot away)? Soho almost makes it, but not quite.

Although the film features a female protagonist in Ellie, along with a plethora of other female characters throughout the movie, I truly felt that one may miss the deeper representation of isolation and mental illness that seem to penetrate the plot from the very beginning. I approached this film from the perspective in a few ways:

1) From the very beginning, the viewer can tell that the protagonist clearly has a history of dealing with the fall out of her mother's illness. She is emboldened by moving to London for herself, AND her mother. Can she handle this?

2) After getting her feet wet, she runs into issues pretty much from day 1. She handles said situations relatively well all things considered. It isnt until she enters the 60s for the first time that we learn she is extremely overconfident in what she can handle. If she was truly able to handle what was going on at first, she would have realized she was biting off more than she can chew once she finds that hickie on her neck from Jack.

3) Her overconfidence leaves her further isolated from reality. It seems that the only way she is really able to overcome anything is through running away or towards it. She fails to see many clues right in front of her because she is too indulged in her own world, her own mind....This is pretty cut and dry narcissism.

I think watching the film from this standpoint will help some get through what can be a frustrating plot at times. At the end of the day, I believe it is hard because as viewers we are distant from this mental state but the film clearly respects that battle first and foremost; Feminist themes slide in thereafter to reinforce the feelings of isolation that I think are relevant to anyone regardless of gender or identity.

Enjoyable film, highly recommend if you're an Edgar Wright fan :)

Last Night in Soho is an aptly psychedelic thriller which follows "Ellie," Thomasin McKenzie, from her humble, small town roots into the hustle and bustle of modern London's Soho District. She is leaving to attend fashion school.. It's clear from the outset that Ellie has been, and needed to be, sheltered by her grandmother, from problems in the past, and an ongoing sensitivity to "things beyond."

Ellie is overwhelmed by the city and her much more sophisticated classmates, and escapes to a quieter one room flat. But almost at once her sleep is invaded by "visions" from the life of a former 1960s occupant of the flat, Sandie, Anya Taylor-Joy. Sandie came to Soho to be a singer. She has all the drive and confidence that Ellie lacks. Intoxicated by the allure of the visions, Ellie dives in and it quickly becomes clear that the line between them is blurring, especially in a visually dazzling sequence where mirrors, camera choreography and actor swaps achieve this w/o CGI. But quickly, things take a dark turn and Ellie discovers that leaving the ball was never an option.

Soho morphs into a psycholigical whodunit thriller with more and more of the uglier 60s reality crossing over into Ellie's today.

The obvious plot resolution where you'd have the 2 spirits combine to solve the mystery is too mundane for director Edgar Wright. He throws twist after twist at you like a carney knife thrower until, like Ellie, all you want is out. But Wright has one more card up his sleeve. Wright's direction is like a spinning waltz. Lively and kinetic, but it never oversteps into consciously noticeable.

Soho is a tour de force for McKenzie, Taylor-Joy and, in her final film role, Diana Rigg. Matt Smith and Terence Stamp are both excellent, but are relegated to plot devices. Soho is a cinematic love letter to London and Soho, of both times.

When it is breathlessly over, much of the plot seems confused. Plot clues don't add up. For us, as for the players, life is never tidy. But you won't care. You'll shrug it off like an unintended insult from a friend at a party, because with Soho, the totality of the parts far exceeds the sum, even if the math doesn't quite square.

5.0 out of 5 stars La mejor película del 2021

Reviewed in Mexico 🇲🇽 on January 23, 2022

3.0 out of 5 stars Achtung! Nur 4K ohne Blu-Ray!

Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on February 6, 2022

Schade.
