A Killing in a Small Town, also known as Evidence of Love, is a 1990 American crime drama television film directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal and written by Cynthia Cidre. The film is based on the 1984 non-fiction book Evidence of Love by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson, and stars Barbara Hershey and Brian Dennehy. It premiered on CBS on May 22, 1990. Hershey won the 1990 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress - Miniseries or a Movie.[1]

Plot[edit]

A small town is shocked by the brutal ax murder of a woman, Peggy Blankenship. However, they are even more shocked when a reserved neighboring woman, Candy Morrison, who is a wife and mother, becomes the chief suspect. During the investigation, she is placed under hypnosis which reveals a different personality completely.

The film is based on the true story of Wylie, Texas housewife Candy Montgomery's murder of Betty Gore in 1980, and is sometimes titled Evidence of Love, after the 1984 book from which it was adapted.[2]

Cast[edit]

  • Barbara Hershey as Candy Morrison
  • Lee Garlington as Peggy Blankenship
  • Brian Dennehy as Ed Reivers
  • Richard Gilliland as Ed Morrison
  • John Terry as Stan Blankenship
  • Hal Holbrook as Dr. Beardsley

Production[edit]

Portions of the film, including interior and exterior scenes of Candy Morrison's home, were actually filmed in Plano, Texas.

I loved that I was able to find this older hard to find lifetime movie. They never show it on TV anymore so now I can watch it whenever I want. Thanks!!

This movie is REALLY good! Barbara Hershey and Lee Garlington are 2 super actresses and do such a great job in the roles they portray in this film. What makes this movie so disturbing is that the events unfold so normal, average and realistic, but then, all of a sudden, it gets so out of control. Something that has to be seen to be believed and, as if that isn’t enough, apparently it’s based on a true story! Great movie and a must-see!

Based on true events and the acting was understated but credible for the most part. No wonder it earned awards. Wished the film gave more background and especially aftermath details. It was so engaging, I researched a bit after to learn more. The tragedy reached far beyond what is shown. ... would explain but don’t want to spoil the movie.

I had read about this case in a older true crime book that was written not long after the crime occurred. There are some very unusual aspects to the people involved, especially the murderer and I wondered if the movie could do justice to the story. The acting and the pacing, the story itself, are all very well done and the amazing twists and revelations from the true story and that were in the book, were all included in this film. I was worried they might not be able to portray it properly but I was very satisfied with this dramatization.

Candy having an affair and cheating on her husband. Very bad thing to do! Candy having an affair with the husband of HER BEST FRIEND? Hello? Seriously, what could be worse!
I don't blame Peggy (the other man's wife ) for being upset and angry with her friend for her betrayal. Who could blame her for that? However, if what Candy says happened that morning at her friend's house is in fact the truth then Candy had the right to defend herself against her suddenly-gone-homicidal-nuts ax-waving friend!!!

This is a made-for-TV film which could have acquitted itself well on a general cinema release, it's so incredibly good.
Basically it's the (fact-based) story of how a conventional-seeming Mom from small-town Texas suddenly commits an horrific murder for no apparent reason. Brian Dennehy plays the lawyer hired to defend her, and the woman herself is played by Barbara Hershey in a career-best performance. The story unfolds in three main locations - the psychoanalyst's couch, where a psychiatrist (played by Hal Holbrook) uses regression hypnosis to tease out the reasons for the woman's actions; the police station, where the various protagonists give their version of events and, of course, the court room, where the trial and its revelations bring out the whole story.
The acting from everyone involved is faultless, with not a duff note anywhere. Hal Holbrook plays wonderfully against type as the therapist convinced of the woman's innocence despite the facts of her terrible actions (he normally specialises in playing oleaginous, sweaty sleazeballs, like the crooked scientist in "Capricorn One"). Brian Dennehy is perfect, as usual, playing the small-town contracts lawyer out of his depth in a murder case. But towering above everybody is Barbara Hershey, scarcely recognisable as the dowdy homebody who moves seamlessly through the evolutions of Mom, Other Woman, and tormented and repressed housewife, who finally explodes into a screaming banshee when finally pushed an inch too far in the court-room climax.
I don't normally rate Barbara Hershey; I feel that she usually relies too heavily on her physical beauty to carry her through whatever parts she plays, so that I've never credited her with much talent. Here, however, she covers herself with glory, blowing everyone else off the screen (including Brian Dennehy, which takes some doing) and really convincing you that she IS the person she is playing. My God, Barbara, so you really CAN act. More, woman, more...

this film i saw on tv here in UK its known as "evidence of love" but the film to buy is called "a killing in a small town" it is the same film though the dvd comes with a trailer and some biographies on the dvd its fantastic ! and worth money
this film is based on a true story about 2 neighbours who did fight and one end up murdering the other neighbour gruesomely it happened in USA so its a true story ! all because one of the neighbours decided to have an affair with the other neighbours partner
barbara hershey played a good role in this film i am a hershey fan and there aint too much violent scenes in this film i mean there are a couple but not many but u expect that when its a axe murder !
but if u like shocking real life films this is the ideal film to add to your collection !
