Is season 2 of Julie and the Phantoms Cancelled?

Julie and the Phantoms is not coming back to Netflix, at least for now. The series is staying cancelled, but executive producer Kenny Ortega says it is possible the series could return for a second season at some point. Following the series’ cancellation, fans started a marquee campaign to bring the series back.

Starring Madison Reyes, Charlie Gillespie, Owen Patrick Joyner, Jeremy Shada, Jadah Marie, Sacha Carlson, Savannah May, Booboo Stewart, and Cheyenne Jackson, the musical dramedy series follows a young girl who leads a musical band of teen ghosts.

Per Deadline, Ortega said the following about the cancellation and potential return of Julie and the Phantoms:

“At this particular time, no. I’m grateful to Netflix for greenlighting the project and for letting Dan, Dave, and I have this time. I feel it’s some of the best work I’ve done for kids and family, and young adult entertainment. I’m proud of it. And if it never happens again and it doesn’t have an afterlife, I’m grateful that it exists. I hope it exists forever so others can find it and watch it over the years.

But you know, anything is possible. I don’t want to jinx it. If Netflix wants to carry on with it anytime in the future, perhaps someone else will be interested in it. Perhaps we could tour the kids as a music group or maybe a film. But for now, there are no plans.

I wish that I could tell the fans that all of [their efforts] will get them Julie back. All I can really say is how much all of this has mattered to all of us who made the show and that we love them and are so grateful for the passion they’ve shown to the project.

It’s just wonderful to have been given the opportunity to, not only do a musical drive story about a Latino family, but I was able to select a young girl out of a high school in Allentown, Pennsylvania who had never been in front of a professional camera or a recording studio before,” Ortega said. “And boy, did she bring this show to life.”

Netflix is sending Julie and the Phantoms to its eternal rest, canceling the supernatural musical comedy after just one season, TVLine has learned.

Executive producer Kenny Ortega confirmed the long-awaited (and long-dreaded) news via an Instagram post on Saturday.

“Our [Julie and the Phantoms] family want to send our love and endless thanks to our Fantoms all over the world for the tremendous outpouring of love and support you have shown us since our premiere,” Ortega writes. “We learned this week that Netflix will not be picking us up for another season. Although our hearts are saddened, we move on with such pride for what we accomplished as a team and the family we built while creating Julie.”

He concludes: “We hope you will continue to follow us as we move forward with our work and careers. Happy Holidays to you all. Wishing you good health, love and #perfectharmony in all you pursue! Kenny, the Cast, Writers, Producers, Creatives, BC Crew, and our devoted [Netflix[ Team!”

Based on the Brazilian television series Julie e os Fantasmas, Netflix’s adaptation starred Madison Reyes as Julie Molina, a teenage musician who accidentally summons the ghosts of dead rockers Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner) and Reggie (Jeremy Shada). The boys help Julie achieve her dreams, while she helps them fulfill their own unfinished music business.

The show’s cast also included Jadah Marie as Flynn, Julie’s best friend; Sacha Carlson Nick, Julie’s initial crush; Savannah May as Carrie, Julie’s nemesis; Cheyenne Jackson as Caleb, a jazzy ghost with nefarious intentions; Carlos Ponce as Ray, Julie’s father; and Booboo Stewart as Willie, another ghost who strikes up a romance with Alex.

“If we are lucky enough to get a second season, the ghosts would have a lot going on,” executive producers David Hoge and Dan Cross told TVLine in September. “They’ve always wanted to get their music out there for the world to hear. Like Luke always says, they want that connection with their audience. A number one album? Song at the top of the charts? Whatever it takes to be remembered for their music. But as you saw at the very end, there are still plenty of obstacles to get in their way. And now it seems there’s an ‘obstacle’ in the inner circle.”

The show’s first (and now only) season won Best Musical Moment at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, before picking up three Daytime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Original Song (for “Unsaid Emily”), Outstanding Costume Design and Multiple Camera Editing.
