The bend and snap turns 20 today! On July 13, 2001, the film Legally Blondewas released, and we were introduced to the bend and snap. History was made, and Elle Woods became an inspiration.
Reese Witherspoon brought the character, Elle Woods, to life with such energy and fashion sense. Legally Blonde is a comedy movie based on a novel of the same name by Amanda Brown. It is gained a bit of a cult following, and Witherspoon has stated that fans tell her that Elle was a true inspiration to them enrolling in law school.
The film follows Elle, a sorority sister of the Delta Nu House, whose main goal in life is social activities. She submits an outrageous entrance video to Harvard Law and is accepted. She wants to attend the prestigious college to follow the love of her life, Warner Huntington III. When she arrives at Harvard, she realizes she’s not in LA any longer. She doesn’t allow that to hinder her but pushes on to make a name for herself.
The sequel, Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde, gave us another chapter in Elle’s life. This film takes place after college when she moves to Washington DC for a job working for a congresswoman. In May 2020, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor announced they would be writing a third film scheduled to release in May 2022.

Today, on the 20th anniversary of the film, you can watch Legally Blonde on Netflix. You can enjoy watching Elle and Bruiser as they travel to Harvard Law School. They meet some great new friends, and Elle takes Harvard by storm in a flutter of pink, Prada and glitter.

Body + Soul reported that the bend and snap was invented during a drunken night at a bar. The producer, Marc Platt and co-writers Karen McCallah and Kirsten Smith were trying to come up with a “B Plot” for Paulette. Over drinks, one night out, they came up with this over-the-top idea of the move, and history was made. The move, however absurd, was a genius idea, and anyone who has watched the film fondly remembers the scene.
